7 Great Ways to Cultivate Authenticity in Relationships

Are you showing the people you feel closest to who you really are?

It’s not easy to show people our true selves, and say how we REALLY feel, when we know they aren’t gonna like it!

As a life coach for over 25 years, it seems that the issues that come up most are how we are in relationship to others. And in my personal life, asking friends for what I need is not easy for me. It is in romantic relationships, but not friendships. So I understand if it’s hard to do for you as well.

So, I’ve traveled this road… and we’re both looking for more authenticity in relationships.

In this blog post, we’ll explore what authenticity in relationships means, why it’s essential, and how you can cultivate it in your life.

What does authenticity in relationships mean?

Being authentic in relationships means showing up as your true self. It means you don’t hide who you are, your emotions, or your needs. You present yourself without fear of judgment or rejection. Authenticity is about self-honesty—about being open with both your strengths and vulnerabilities.

True authenticity allows your relationships to thrive because it invites genuine soul connection.

When you’re honest about your feelings, desires, and boundaries, others can truly see who you are. This type of connection is not just fulfilling but also healing for both parties involved.

Why authenticity matters

Authenticity is key for forming healthy, long-lasting relationships. Without it, people often feel disconnected or lonely in their relationships, even when they are surrounded by others.

When you’re not true to yourself, you’re likely to feel unfulfilled. You may also attract people who don’t truly resonate with who you are, leading to a sense of emptiness.

Genuine relationships require vulnerability and trust.

When you allow yourself to be vulnerable, you give others permission to do the same. This mutual openness builds strong, meaningful connections.

The struggle to be authentic

Sometimes, it’s hard to be authentic because of fears, insecurities, or past experiences. Maybe you’ve been taught that your true self isn’t good enough or that you must act in a certain way to be accepted.

Think about a time when you wanted to do something but didn’t because of fear of rejection, fear that you weren’t good enough or that others wouldn’t accept you. These fears can lead us to wear masks or ignore what the soul is urging us to do.

Why do we hide our true selves?

There are several reasons why people shy away from authenticity:

  • Fear of judgment: We’re often afraid of what others will think if they see the real us. We worry we won’t fit in or be accepted.
  • Fear of rejection: Vulnerability requires putting yourself out there, and that means risking rejection. It can be daunting to be honest about who you are if you’re afraid people might not like you.
  • Cultural expectations: Society and family can place heavy expectations on us. We may feel pressured to fit into a particular role—whether it’s to be the perfect parent, partner, or friend.
  • Low self-esteem: If you don’t believe in yourself, you’re less likely to feel confident enough to express your true self.

How to cultivate authenticity in relationships

Here are several ways to nurture authenticity in relationships…

1. Connect with yourself

To be authentic, you must be in touch with your true self—the part of you that knows who you are at your core.

Don’t ignore the things within you that you want to express. If you feel a strong urge to express yourself, teach, lead, or heal, honor those desires. Living in alignment with your soul’s purpose is the foundation of authenticity.

2. Embrace vulnerability

Being vulnerable can be scary, but it’s also necessary for genuine connection. Dr. John Gottman, a renowned relationship expert, emphasizes that vulnerability is a key component of building trust and emotional intimacy in relationships. He has found that couples who are willing to be open and share their true feelings create a stronger bond and a deeper connection.

When you open up about your true feelings—even the difficult ones—you allow others to see the real you. This kind of honesty can deepen your relationships and create trust.

It’s okay to acknowledge your weaknesses, share your struggles, or admit when you need help. Authenticity isn’t about perfection—it’s about being real, even when things are messy.

3. Express your needs

An essential part of authenticity is learning to express your needs clearly and without fear. Many of us struggle to voice our needs because we don’t want to inconvenience others or appear “needy.” But denying what you need—whether it’s time alone, emotional support, or space to grow—is a form of self-betrayal.

Communicate honestly about your needs and encourage your partner or friends to do the same. This will make your relationships healthier and more fulfilling for everyone involved.

I confess that this is hard for me because I don’t like people being mad at me. So I understand if this is difficult for you. Just remind yourself that expressing what you need is important for you and anyone who doesn’t understand, is probably wrong for you.

4. Set boundaries in relationships

Setting boundaries in relationships is another crucial aspect of authenticity. Boundaries are not walls; they are guidelines that define what is acceptable for you. They help you protect your well-being and prevent resentment. Without boundaries, you may end up feeling overwhelmed or taken advantage of.

I emphasize this to remind myself!

Being clear about your boundaries lets others know where you stand and helps you maintain your authenticity. It takes a bit of courage too… that I don’t always have.

6. Speak your truth

Make it your clear intention to speak your truth… even though, man it’s hard.

This involves sharing your thoughts, feelings, and experiences honestly, even when it feels uncomfortable. When you speak your truth, you honor your values and express who you are at your core. This openness invites deeper understanding and connection with others, while also showing respect for yourself.

Sometimes we need to literally write it in a letter first. Or rehearse it. Or write out the text and then not send it but say it. It just ain’t easy!

6. Cultivate emotional resilience

Building emotional resilience helps you stay true to yourself, even in challenging situations. When you develop the ability to bounce back from setbacks and manage your emotions effectively, you can maintain authenticity without getting overwhelmed by external pressures.

7. Acknowledge discomfort

Authenticity often involves stepping out of your comfort zone, and this can be uncomfortable. Instead of avoiding discomfort, acknowledge it and explore its source.

By understanding why you feel uncomfortable, you can address underlying fears and insecurities that may be holding you back from being true to yourself. Facing discomfort head-on allows for personal growth.

Final thoughts

Authenticity in relationships is a continuous journey of getting to know yourself, shedding layers of fear and pretense, and choosing to show up as the real you.

No, it’s not easy.

But ultimately, we must speak our truth right? Note to self: Speak your truth.
