7 Ways To Cultivate Courage To Be Yourself
We all wish for courage… the courage to say or do what feels true.
Cultivating courage is essential for living authentically, but it’s easier said than done.
Part of my spiritual path and those of my clients is working to cultivate the courage to be yourself. I’ve been coaching people for over 25 years and I genuinely feel that courage is something we build over time.
You’re here because you want to cultivate the courage to be yourself and live with confidence and alignment.
This article will explore practical ways to build the bravery needed to cultivate courage to be yourself.
7 Ways to Cultivate The Courage To Be Yourself
Understanding courage in authenticity
What does it mean to be courageous in being yourself?
Courage in this context isn’t about grand, heroic acts. It’s about the everyday bravery of showing up as your genuine self, even when it feels risky or uncomfortable.
Even when you’re vulnerable.
It’s the strength to voice your true thoughts, pursue your dreams, and stand by your values, regardless of what others think of you.
Again, easier said than done. My book The Butterfly Silhouette is about that transition–finding the courage to go from who you are to who you’re meant to become.

The psychology of courage
Research shows that courage is not an innate trait but a skill that can be developed.
What a relief.
Psychologists define courage as the willingness to face fears and act despite them.
Buddhist nun and author of When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice For Difficult Times, Pema Chodron, wrote that her ex-husband always said she was brave because she was afraid of everything… and did things anyway.
I love this distinction.
When it comes to authenticity, this means confronting the fear of judgment, rejection, or failure that often holds us back from being our true selves.

7 strategies to build courage deeper dive
Here’s more information about the seven strategies to build courage…
1. Start with small steps
Courage, like any skill, grows with practice.
Begin by taking small risks in expressing your authentic self.
This could be sharing an opinion in a low-stakes situation or trying a new style that reflects your personality.
2. Use visualization techniques
Imagine yourself confidently expressing your true self in various scenarios.
Visualization can help you feel more prepared and less anxious when faced with real-life situations.
3. Practice self-compassion
Be kind to yourself as you work on building courage.
Remember, it’s human to be afraid.
It’s natural to fear scary things.
Be mindful of negative self-talk that tells you you’re weak or judges you.
And tell your inner critic that you’re not buying it!!
4. Developing a courage mindset
Cultivating courage is as much about mindset as it is about action.
High-vibe thinking, a term I coined and teach in healthcare, is all about having the mindset that supports you to fulfill your potential.
Challenge negative self-talk that undermines your courage. Instead of thinking, I can’t do this…
Try…
This is challenging, but I can handle it.
I’ll figure this out.
I’ve figured it out before.

5. Embrace discomfort
Recognize that feeling uncomfortable or resistance is a natural part of growth and self-discovery.
View discomfort as a sign that you’re pushing your boundaries and becoming more courageous. If you’re never uncomfortable, you may not be challenging yourself enough.
6. Focus on personal growth
Shift your focus from fear of failure to opportunities for learning and growth.
Again, this is about mindset. I am here to learn and grow… is a mindset.
Our brains can absolutely be reprogramed to support us in life.
7. Feel the fear and do it anyway
Dr. Susan Jeffers’ great book, Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway offers invaluable insights into cultivating courage.
Dr. Jeffers argues that fear is a natural part of growth and change, not something to be avoided.
She encourages her readers to reframe their relationship with fear, seeing it as a sign of personal expansion rather than a warning to retreat.
I’ve read this book a few times and each time I get something new out of it.
The title alone says it all… Feel your fear and do it anyway.
Jeffers’ central message is that by facing our fears head-on, we can transform our lives and achieve greater personal fulfillment.

Courage-building exercises
Incorporate these exercises into your daily life to strengthen your courage muscles:
The 5-second rule
When you feel the urge to express your authentic self but hesitate, count backwards from 5 and then take action.
This technique, popularized by Mel Robbins, can help you overcome initial resistance.
Daily acts of micro-courage
Set a goal to perform one small act of courage each day.
This could be as simple as expressing a genuine opinion or wearing something different that reflects your style.

Facing fears incrementally
Make a list of situations where you struggle to be authentic, ordered from least to most challenging. Gradually work your way through the list, building confidence as you go.
Courage in extra challenging environments
Sometimes, the environment we’re in can make it particularly challenging to be courageous.
We’re way outside of our comfort zone.
Here’s how to stay true to yourself in difficult situations:
Assertiveness training
Learn and practice assertiveness techniques to express your needs and set boundaries that honor your authentic self.
Identifying allies
Look for like-minded individuals or potential mentors who can support and encourage your authentic emotions and creative expression.
Creating safe spaces
If possible, create or seek out environments where you feel safe to be yourself.
This could be a supportive group, a creative class, sacred spaces in your home, or even an online community.

Building resilience
Resilience is crucial for maintaining courage in the face of setbacks. Here’s how to strengthen your resilience:
Learn from setbacks
View challenges as opportunities to learn and grow stronger. Analyze what went wrong and how you can approach similar situations differently in the future.
Develop a support network
Surround yourself with people who encourage and support your authentic self.
Having a strong support system can give you the confidence to be courageous.
Practice self-care
Taking care of your physical and mental health is essential for building resilience.
Ensure you’re getting enough rest, exercise, and engaging in activities that recharge you.
Identifying your fears
Before you can cultivate the courage, to be yourself, you need to understand what’s holding you back.
Here are some ways to identify your fears…
Self-reflection exercises
Take time to reflect on situations where you feel hesitant to be yourself.
What specific fears come up?
Are you afraid of disapproval, conflict, or not meeting others’ expectations?
Journaling about past experiences
Write about times when you felt inauthentic.
What prevented you from being genuine?
Understanding these patterns can help you identify the fears you need to address.
And, write about times you felt less self loving than you’d like.
Seeking feedback from people you trust
Sometimes, others can see our fears more clearly than we can.
Ask trusted friends or mentors if they’ve noticed situations where you seem hesitant to be yourself.
Final thoughts
Cultivating the courage to be yourself is a transformative process that opens up new possibilities in life.
It’s about facing your fears, challenging your comfort zone, and gradually building the strength to express your true self.
Remember, courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s the willingness to act despite fear.
So, what small act of courage will you take today to move closer to your authentic self?
