Being True to Yourself: A Complete Guide to Living from Your Soul
You say yes when you mean no. You smile through conversations that drain you. You’re doing things you don’t actually want to do, saying things you don’t mean, choosing what keeps the peace over what feels true.
As a soul coach with over 25 years of experience helping people reconnect with their truth, and author of The Butterfly Silhouette: 12 Principles for Following Your Soul Where It Must Go (winner of the San Francisco Book Festival in both Spirituality and Poetry categories, 2012), I’ve watched countless people lean into their truth.
Being true to yourself isn’t selfish or indulgent. It’s how your soul breathes.
If you’re ready to understand what being true to yourself actually means and how to live from that place, this guide will show you the path forward.
What Does Being True to Yourself Mean?
Being true to yourself means listening to your soul and following what it needs, even when it’s uncomfortable or goes against what others expect.
The soul is your True Self, which is your essence. It includes your gifts, your challenges, your dreams, your quirks, your shadows, the parts you love and the parts you’re still learning to accept. When you’re being true to yourself, your life reflects who you actually are, not who you think you should be.
This doesn’t mean you’re always comfortable. Being true to yourself sometimes means choosing the harder path. Setting boundaries that disappoint people. Speaking your truth when silence would be easier. Following your calling even when others don’t understand.
But when you live this way, something shifts. You stop carrying the weight of pretending. You stop second-guessing every choice. You become true to YOU.

The Soul as Your True Self
Think of the soul as the seed within you. Soul doctor James Hillman talks about this beautifully in The Soul’s Code. (I love this book.)
This seed contains everything you’re meant to become. Your soul knows what you need. It knows when something is right or wrong for you. It calls you back when you stray away from yourself.
When you listen to your soul and follow what it needs, you’re being true to yourself. This is the heart of my work and why I wrote The Butterfly Silhouette. The book teaches 12 Principles for following your soul where it must go, because your soul has its own path, its own timing, its own wisdom.
All of truth-finding and depth emanates from the soul. (which is conveniently divinely connected.) We are all connected to Source and returning to a place of oneness… eventually.

Why Being True to Yourself Matters
When you’re not being true to yourself, you feel it. Maybe you’re tired in a way that sleep doesn’t fix. Maybe you notice yourself going along with things that you don’t want to do. Maybe you’re doing well by most measures, but you feel a deeper longing.
This happens when there’s disconnect between who you are and what your life feels like. When you’re prioritizing what keeps the peace over what’s actually true for you. When you’re making choices based on what others want rather than what YOU want.
Being true to yourself matters for your soul’s evolution.
Your soul didn’t come here to lay low. It came here to grow, to learn, to express itself. When you live authentically, the soul is fed.
This is Principle 1 in The Butterfly Silhouette: Your commitment to your own path, your destiny, your individuality. Each of us is unique, with gifts and lessons that are ours alone. When you honor your individuality, the universe is saying: That’s what we want her to do. Be you, just be you.
Being true to yourself also creates permission for others to do the same. When you have the courage to be yourself, it gives those around you courage too.

Finding Your True Self
However, finding your true self takes some inner work (or you can think of it as play?) Most of us have patterns from early life (or past lives) that keep us repeating the same mistakes. It’s like we’re on repeat… different person, same patterns. Different situation, but it feels familiar, and not in a good way.
After my husband passed away years ago, I was completely lost… in every way. With two sons at the time, and deep grief, I had to rebuild my life. I had to heal many many things.
Yet, I was seeking long before that. Even earlier on I wasn’t doing work that fulfilled me. I didn’t understand myself spiritually. And, I was angry about things from my childhood and I hadn’t dealt with it. That’s when I wrote The Butterfly Silhouette, first edition, to help me find myself and my soul.
All of these bends in the road create emotional baggage that we must address eventually to be able to be TRULY true to ourselves.
Here is a great resource I’ve created to help you navigate and heal your emotions. First, emotional release work comes in many varieties and will help you be free.

Commit to Your Destiny
This is Principle 1 in The Butterfly Silhouette: Commit to Your Destiny.
Your soul came here with a loose outline of what’s possible for you. This isn’t fate, it’s potential. You have free will to choose whether you’ll build out what your soul is capable of or let that potential sit dormant.
Being true to yourself means committing to your destiny even though it’s scary. Even when you’re not sure how it will unfold. Even when other people think you’re making a mistake.
Your destiny isn’t a rigid path you’re forced to walk. It’s more like a calling. Something that keeps showing up, that won’t leave you alone, that feels so right even when it’s difficult.
When you ignore this calling to please others or play it safe, you feel it. That restlessness. That sense of waiting. That’s your soul trying to get your attention.
Committing to your destiny means listening when your soul speaks. It means trusting that the desires and longings you carry aren’t random. They’re clues about what you’re here to do.
This doesn’t mean you’ll have all the answers. Most of us don’t wake up with a clear blueprint. But as you stay true to yourself and follow what feels right, your path unfolds in front of you.

The Cost of Not Being True to Yourself
Let’s be honest about what happens when you abandon yourself to please others, fit in, or you’re simply tired!
You might find yourself saying yes to things you resent. Hiding parts of yourself that feel too vulnerable, messy or unattractive. Making decisions based on what’s easiest rather than what feels right.
Over time, this creates a split. The person you show the world and the person you actually are become two different people. This split is exhausting. It drains your energy. It can make you feel lonely even when you’re surrounded by people.
You might also notice patterns repeating. The same conflicts in different relationships. The same feelings of being misunderstood. The same sense that something is missing.
These patterns are actually soul lessons. We keep repeating the same mistakes until we learn from them. When you’re not being true to yourself, you miss the lesson because you’re too busy managing everyone else’s expectations.

See Yourself on a Soul Level
This is Principle 4 in The Butterfly Silhouette: See Yourself on a Soul Level.
When you’re living on a human level, you get caught up in daily dramas, other people’s opinions, and surface concerns. Should I say this? Will they like me? Am I doing it right?
But when you see yourself on a soul level, everything shifts. You remember that you’re here for a deeper cause. Your life gains a depth and purpose that feels right to you. What other people think matters far less than whether you’re honoring your truth.
Seeing yourself on a soul level means stepping back from the noise and remembering who you really are. Not your job title. Not your relationship status. Not your accomplishments or failures. Your soul.
From this perspective, being true to yourself isn’t optional. It’s essential. Because your soul didn’t come here to be nice or perfect or successful. It came here to evolve, to express itself, to fulfill its purpose.
When you operate from a soul level, decisions become clearer. You stop worrying so much about what’s impressive and start asking what’s true. You stop comparing yourself to others because you remember you’re on your own unique path.
This perspective also brings compassion. When you see yourself as a soul who’s learning, you can be gentler with your mistakes. You can give yourself grace for being imperfect.

How to Be Your True Self
Being your true self comes from a regular practice of choosing to be true each day, each week, each year. Here are ways to begin.
Set Clear Boundaries
Boundaries are how you protect what matters to you. They’re not about controlling other people. They’re about honoring your own soulful needs and limits.
When your boss expects you to work late but you need time with family, a boundary might sound like: I need this evening with my family, but I can address this task tomorrow morning.
When friends or family repeatedly dismisses your feelings, a boundary might sound like: I feel upset when my ideas are disregarded. I’d appreciate it if you’d listen.
Boundaries feel uncomfortable at first, especially if you’re used to putting everyone else first or backing down quickly. But discomfort doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. It means you’re doing something different.
As you practice setting boundaries, you’ll notice something shift. You’ll have more energy. You’ll be less resentful and angry. You’ll feel more like yourself. You’ll attract people who respect who you are.

Listen to Your Inner Voice
Building your intuition connects you to your higher self and your soul. When something feels right, that’s information. When something feels off, that’s also information.
Many of us have learned to ignore our inner voice. We overthink. We analyze. We ask everyone else what they think before we check in with ourselves.
Practice tuning in. When you’re making a decision, pause. Notice how each option feels in your body. Trust that inner sense that says “this feels right” or “something seems off.”
To build this skill, try journaling about your decisions and feelings. Spend 10 minutes each day writing down your thoughts without censoring them. Over time, you’ll recognize the sound of your own truth.

Speak Your Truth
Authenticity requires honest communication. This doesn’t mean saying everything you think. It means expressing what matters when it matters.
When you speak your truth, you honor your values and express who you are at your core. This openness invites deeper understanding and creates real connection.
Sometimes this means telling a friend how you really feel about a situation. Sometimes it means admitting to a mistake at work. Sometimes it means saying I don’t know instead of pretending you have all the answers. It’s liberating.
Speaking your truth gets easier with practice. Start with low-stakes situations. Share a genuine opinion with a trusted friend. Express a preference instead of going along with what everyone else wants.
As you build confidence in your voice, you’ll find yourself able to speak up in harder situations. The key is remembering that your voice matters. What you think and feel deserves to be expressed.

Let Go of External Validation
We’re taught from a young age to seek approval. Gold stars. Good grades. Likes on social media. Praise from authority figures.
Being true to yourself means recognizing that your worth doesn’t come from others. Period. It comes from living in alignment with your soul.
This doesn’t mean you never care what anyone thinks. It means you check in with yourself first. Before you post something online, ask: Is this true to me, or am I seeking approval? Before you make a big decision, ask: What do I actually want, not just what sounds impressive?
Practice daily affirmations like:
I am enough as I am, regardless of what others think.
I am that I am affirms your divine nature.
I depend solely on myself and God for my happiness, security, and inner peace.
These aren’t just nice thoughts. They’re reprogramming the patterns that keep you seeking validation outside yourself.
Embrace Vulnerability
Vulnerability isn’t always easy. And, we don’t have to be vulnerable with people we don’t feel safe with! When you’re willing to be seen as you actually are, imperfections and all, you create space for real connection.
This doesn’t mean you share everything with everyone. You get to choose who’s safe. But with people who have earned your trust, let them see you. Share your fears. Admit when you’re struggling. Stop pretending everything is fine when it’s not.
This is Principle 5 in The Butterfly Silhouette: Give Yourself Compassion for All That You Are. When you give yourself permission to be imperfect, to be learning, to be human, you stop exhausting yourself with the performance of having it all together.
Vulnerability also means accepting all parts of yourself. The parts you’re proud of and the parts you’re working on. The strengths and the weaknesses. The light and the shadows.
As you practice self-acceptance, being true to yourself becomes easier because you’re not trying to be someone you’re not.

Practical Tools for Living Authentically
Being true to yourself becomes more natural when you have daily practices that keep you connected to your truth.
Create a Morning Check-In Ritual
Start your day by checking in with your heart and soul. How do you feel today? What does your soul need? This simple practice creates space for authenticity throughout your day.
You might light a candle, sit quietly for a few minutes, or journal your thoughts. The specific practice matters less than the intention to tune in to yourself.
I have a daily soul alignment practice (see Resources) that can be a simple 2 minutes or about 20 minutes depending on my schedule. But I must connect with myself in a deeper way each day or I lose my bearings.
Practice Self-Compassion
Being true to yourself means treating yourself with kindness, especially when you mess up or make mistakes.
Many of us have a harsh inner voice that shows up right when we’re already hurting. Catch that voice. Choose something different.
This is hard. I’m doing my best. I’m learning.
Self-compassion helps you develop this kinder inner dialogue. When you’re gentle with yourself, authenticity flows more naturally because you’re not trying to prove you’re good enough.

Connect with Your Soul Daily
Connecting with your soul is how you stay aligned with your truth. This might look like meditation, time in nature, or simply sitting in silence.
The key is giving yourself space to hear your inner voice instead of drowning it out with noise and distraction.
My Soul Alignment Program teaches the daily practice I use to stay connected with my soul and spirit team. It’s not complicated, but it does require showing up consistently.

Journal for Self-Discovery
Writing helps you access truths you might not even know you’re carrying. Set aside time to write without censoring yourself. Let whatever wants to come out, come out.
You might use journaling prompts to explore specific areas of your life. Or you might simply write freely, letting your thoughts spill onto the page.
Over time, patterns emerge. You start to recognize your own voice. You see more clearly what matters to you and where you’ve been abandoning yourself.

Trust Your Authentic Emotions
Your emotions are messengers. They tell you what needs your attention. When you honor how you feel instead of judging or suppressing it, you stay connected to your truth.
If you’re sad, let yourself be sad. If you’re angry, find healthy ways to express it. If you’re joyful, let yourself feel that fully.
Authentic emotions connect you to your soul. They keep you honest about what’s actually happening inside you.

Common Obstacles to Being True to Yourself
Let’s acknowledge what makes this work hard.
Fear of Judgment
We worry what others will think if they see the real us. We’re afraid we won’t fit in or be accepted. We’ll be ostracized from our community! Oh God forbid!
Yet, this fear is real, and it makes total sense. Most of us have experienced rejection for being ourselves. But when you hide who you are to avoid judgment, it hurts you.
The people who matter will love the real you. The ones who don’t aren’t your people anyway.
Fear of Rejection
Being true to yourself means some people might not like what they see. You might lose relationships that were built on a false version of you.
This is painful. But it’s also necessary. As you become more authentic, your relationships will naturally shift. Some will deepen. Some will fall away. This isn’t failure—it’s alignment.
People-Pleasing Patterns
If you’ve spent years putting others first, being true to yourself will feel selfish and really hard! I know! You might feel guilty for prioritizing your needs or saying no.
Remember: You can’t pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It’s absolutely necessary to care for yourself in a deeper soulful way. It’s how you stay available enough to show up as your best self for the people who matter. Who you are trickles onto those around you.
Your energy has a ripple effect.

Confusion About Who You Are
Sometimes the obstacle isn’t fear—it’s simply not knowing who you are anymore. You’ve been so many things to so many people that you’ve lost track of your own preferences and needs.
If this is you, start small. Notice what makes you feel alive. What drains you. What you gravitate toward when no one is watching. These clues will lead you back to yourself.
When Being True to Yourself Means Prying Yourself Free
This is Principle 9 in The Butterfly Silhouette: Pry Yourself Free.
Sometimes being true to yourself means breaking free from old patterns, old stories, old ways of being that kept you small. You’re literally prying yourself free from what’s held you back.
This might mean leaving a relationship that no longer serves you. Changing careers even though everyone thinks you’re crazy. Moving to a new place. Starting over.
These decisions are terrifying because they ask you to trust your soul’s knowing over external security or approval. But when you honor what your soul is asking for, you create space for something new to emerge.
You become freer. More at ease. More yourself.

The Role of Spiritual Growth in Being True to Yourself
Spiritual growth and authenticity go hand in hand. As you grow spiritually, you become more aligned with your true self. As you become more authentic, your spiritual growth deepens.
When you’re being true to yourself, you’re not hiding from what needs to heal. You’re facing uncomfortable truths. You’re feeling difficult emotions. You’re learning the lessons your soul came here to learn.
This is why being true to yourself matters on a soul level. It’s not just about feeling better or being happier, though those are real benefits. It’s about fulfilling the purpose your soul came here for.
Soul alignment is when your outer life matches your inner truth. When what you’re doing in the world reflects who you actually are. This is the goal, not perfection, but alignment.

Living Your Truth in Relationships
Authenticity in relationships means showing up as your true self instead of performing for approval.
This is vulnerable. When you’re honest about your feelings, desires, and boundaries, you risk rejection. But you also create the possibility for real connection.
The relationships worth having are the ones where you can be yourself. Where you don’t have to edit or hide or pretend. Where both people can show up authentically.
As you practice being true to yourself in relationships, you’ll notice some connections deepen while others fade. This is natural. You’re attracting people who resonate with the real you, not the performance version.

Trusting Yourself
Learning to trust yourself is essential for being true to yourself. When you trust your inner knowing, your decisions become clearer. You stop second-guessing everything.
Self-trust builds through small acts of integrity. When you keep promises to yourself. When you honor your boundaries. When you follow through on what matters to you.
Over time, you learn that you can depend on yourself. You don’t need everyone else’s approval to make decisions. You have your own inner authority.

Final Thoughts
Being true to yourself is an ongoing journey to the soul. There will be days when it feels easy and natural. Other days when the old patterns pull at you, when pleasing others seems safer than honoring yourself.
This is normal. Being true to yourself doesn’t mean you never struggle. It means you keep coming back to your truth, even when it’s hard.
Each time you choose authenticity over approval, you strengthen your connection to your soul. Each time you honor your boundaries, speak your truth, or trust your inner voice, you become more yourself.
This is the work. Not fixing what’s wrong with you, but remembering who you actually are beneath all the layers of conditioning and expectation.
Your soul knows the way. Trust it. Follow it. Be true to it.
You are designed to be exactly who you are.
