Your Higher Self: A Practical Guide to Inner Wisdom

higher self, soul power, soul's power

You’ve spent years growing inner wisdom and your connection to something bigger.

And sometimes you wonder… is this my soul, Spirit, my higher self, or something else that’s guiding me in this moment?

As a soul coach for many years, I’ve helped people around the world be true to their soul and recognize the role the higher self plays in their life.

You’re searching for how to connect with this inner wisdom, or you’re looking for that unchanging part of you that remains untouched by being simply human.

In this guide, you’ll discover what your higher self truly is, why it never needs healing, and practical ways to access this true part of you that exists within your soul.

What is your higher self?

Your higher self resides within your soul, yet it’s distinctly different from your soul.

While your soul heals and evolves through experiences and carries the weight of your life journey, your higher self does not. It does not need to evolve.

It’s already there!

Think of your soul as the traveler moving through life, learning and growing from every experience. While your higher self is the unchanging compass within the traveler—never lost, never confused, always pointing true north.

Soul vs. higher self

Your soul is your unique essence that journeys through experiences and evolves. It carries memories, learns lessons, and evolves as you apply the lessons.

Your higher self lives within your soul but remains pristine and undisturbed. While your soul absorbs every joy and wound, your higher self maintains an uninterrupted connection to divine intelligence—untouched by the experiences that shape your soul’s path.

The nature of divine connection

Your higher self maintains an unbroken link to universal intelligence or oneness at all times. This connection doesn’t waver based on your choices, emotions, or circumstances.

While you may feel disconnected from the divine, your higher self is not. The separation you experience happens at an ego level. This is why ego death (less or no ego) helps us open, expand and carry more light.

The higher self is not wrapped up in binary thinking or duality. Instead, it’s love and light, which is our true nature when we leave the 3D world.

Here’s my article on the mantra or prayer I am that I am to affirm your divine nature.

More about the ego…

I’m not speaking about the ego in the common way: someone who boasts, and needs a lot of attention, and who thrives in duality, even though these are all aspects of ego.

But the ego is much more insidious that I realized. The ego is responsible for our fear-based thinking.

For a lovely and easy to understand exploration of the ego, A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle is a must read. I’ve gotten so much out of this book that I have a huge Google document just to process my understanding of these life changing ideas.

Here’s a couple ideas you might appreciate.

On page 54, Eckhart defines the ego… “Ego is a conglomeration of recurring thought forms and conditioned, mental, emotional patterns that are invested with a sense of I, a sense of self.“

OK, that’s not SO bad.

Then, on page 62 he writes…

“You resent other people’s greed, their dishonesty, their lack of integrity, what they are doing, what they did in the past, what they said, what they failed to do, what they should or shouldn’t have done. The ego loves it.”

Oh man. The ego LOVES it.

The more I read, the more I thought I was the worst person on the planet. Then I realized… this is how we all are to varying degrees. Some people might be a 1 level of ego, and many are 10’s. I don’t know how else to understand it.

But, I’d love to move closer to a 1. Back to the higher self…

Constant state of balance

Your highest self exists in perpetual equilibrium. It doesn’t swing between states of clarity and confusion like your thinking mind and/or ego does.

This natural balance is always available to you. The spiritual growth work isn’t fixing anything—it’s learning to access what has always been whole.

Here’s my Guide to Spiritual Growth for further reading.

Untouched by experience

Every challenge you face, every trauma you endure, every joy you celebrate affects your soul. Your highest self remains uninfluenced by all of it.

It’s the stillness beneath it all.

This doesn’t mean your experiences don’t matter. It means there’s a part of you that holds the truth of who you are beyond every story your life has written.

Why connecting with your highest self matters

When you learn to access your higher self, you tap into higher guidance that isn’t colored by fear, wounds, or past disappointments. You gain access to inner wisdom that has never forgotten your divine nature.

I’ve written a separate article with 7 unconventional ways of connecting with your higher self to help you connect with this pure part of you.

How to recognize your higher self’s guidance

Your higher self speaks differently than your soul’s voice or your mind’s chatter.

Soul-level guidance often carries emotional weight and personal history. Higher self wisdom arrives clean, clear, and unattached to outcomes.

Here’s a You Tube video from psychic medium Rebecca Rosen, who is amazing btw, for aligning with your higher self.

Qualities of higher self communication

Highest self guidance has no agenda and no fear. It doesn’t need you to do anything because it knows you’re already complete.

This inner wisdom points you toward alignment without judgment about where you currently are. It shows the way without shaming the path you’ve walked.

The tone of unchanging truth

This part of your spiritual self doesn’t fluctuate based on your mood or circumstances. Its guidance remains consistent whether you’re having the best day or the worst day of your life.

This reliability helps you distinguish it from soul-level intuition, which can be influenced by your emotional state. Your higher self speaks from higher consciousness beyond the weather of your inner world.

As you become more attuned with your higher self and higher divine energies, your frequency elevates. Some people report having left ear ringing, which is can happen as you’re receiving inner guidance.

Practical ways to connect with your higher self

Accessing your higher self requires moving beyond the layers of soul experience and mental activity. You’re not trying to improve or heal this part of yourself—you’re learning to recognize it.

The practices that help aren’t about fixing anything. They’re about creating mindfulness and space to remember what has always been whole.

Stillness beyond meditation

Traditional meditation often focuses on calming the mind or healing the soul. Meditation and benefits for accessing your higher self requires a different quality of stillness.

Sit in silence and let everything be exactly as it is—thoughts, feelings, sensations. Your higher self becomes accessible when you stop trying to change your experience.

Asking from the unchanging place

When you have a question, notice where you’re asking from. Are you asking from your wounded soul seeking answers, or from a deeper place of inner knowing that already has the answer?

Practice asking your questions while holding the awareness that part of you has never been confused. This shift in your relationship to the question changes the quality of higher self guidance you receive.

Body as a bridge

Your physical body holds the space where your higher self dwells within your soul. Certain bodily sensations can indicate when you’ve touched this timeless awareness.

Notice moments when your body feels completely at ease despite external circumstances. That settled quality often signals you’ve accessed higher consciousness.

For me, life will feel effortless. I’ll wonder, was it ever difficult? I’ll be in such a state of flow that I have no doubt that I’m in a different layer of consciousness during those times.

Distinguishing voices within

You have many inner voices—mental chatter, emotional reactions, soul-level intuition, and higher self wisdom. Learning to sort these takes practice and self-awareness.

Your higher self is the quietest and most certain. It doesn’t argue or convince—it simply is.

Obstacles to higher self access

You can’t damage or disconnect your higher self, but you can lose awareness of it. Most obstacles involve mistaking soul-level experience for the totality of who you are.

The belief that you need constant repair can actually block access to your higher self. This part of your authentic self has always existed in its original state.

The trap of constant healing

Spiritual growth often emphasizes healing wounds and correcting imbalances. While this work serves your soul’s evolution, it can keep you focused on what’s broken.

Your higher self offers a different entry point. You can acknowledge your soul’s healing journey while simultaneously accessing the part of you that exists beyond all wounds.

Living from higher self awareness

Accessing your higher self changes how you relate to everything in your life. You stop seeing yourself as broken or incomplete. You identify with yourself as a divine being.

This shift doesn’t mean ignoring your soul’s growth or bypassing difficult emotions. It means having a stable reference point of inner wisdom while your soul does its work.

Integration in relationships

When you connect with your higher self, you see that this same unchanging divine spark exists in those your soul recognizes, those you love. Their souls may be struggling, but the too have access to greater inner wisdom.

This perspective allows you to hold space for others’ journeys without taking on the pain of your soul connections. You can support their growth while recognizing a deeper truth about who they are.

Navigating soul lessons

Your soul came here to have certain experiences and learn specific soul lessons. Your higher self doesn’t interfere with this process because it knows the journey matters as much as the destination.

Accessing your higher self while your soul moves through challenges gives you an anchor. You can feel the full weight of human experience while knowing part of your highest self remains untouched.

Creating from the unchanging place

When you create from higher consciousness, your work carries a different frequency. It comes from wholeness rather than trying to fill an emptiness.

This doesn’t mean your creations will be perfect or that you won’t face obstacles. It means the creative impulse arises from connection to something that has never been disconnected.

Final thoughts

Your highest self doesn’t change or evolve, but your ability to access it deepens over time. The more you recognize this unchanging awareness, the more naturally you can rest in it.

This isn’t about achieving anything or becoming someone new. It’s about remembering what has always been true.

Meanwhile, your higher self remains exactly what it has always been—your eternal connection to divine intelligence, your unshakeable truth, your way home. The practice is simply learning to hear it speak and trusting what it knows.
