People want to keep the vibe up, but someone brings up politics, oh, and then there’s climate change, and what about the thing that person did that was so mean and horrible…

Negativity comes up when we least expect it.

However, you can improve the vibe if you want to…

Practice Active Listening

When engaging with friends, on a subject that interest you, give them your full attention.

Active listening involves:

  • Maintaining eye contact
  • Asking follow up questions
  • Offering empathetic responses

This makes others feel valued and understood, fostering a positive atmosphere.

If the subject doesn’t interest you, and it’s going on longer than you care to listen, excuse yourself, walk away, find another place to be!

Offer support during tough times

When friends are going through hardships, the last thing they want is someone “spreading good vibes.”

A way to balance spreading good vibes with people feeling comfortable being honest about their feeling is to…

  • Empathize so others feel heard. Say, That must have been so frustrating. Or, I hate when that happens.
  • Remind them of their strengths and past successes.
