Living with Intention: Make Choices That Matter To The Soul

|
living with intention, conscious choices, conscious living

I begin each day with a simple intention prayer.

Because we wake up and quickly go into the day and we can lose sight of… what is this all really about?

As a soul coach, overall, I like to focus on what my soul needs for learning and growth. Not that I’m thinking all day long: Is this for my learning and growth? That’s too much! But, when I’m having a problem, I tend to look at it through that lens.

You’re here because you’d like to live intentionally or you believe that intention is everything and you’d like tools to use.

This article will guide you through the process of living with intention and making conscious choices that align with your deepest being.

What is living with intention?

Living with intention means making choices based on what matters to your soul, not just reacting to what’s in front of you. It’s about pausing before you decide and asking yourself if this choice brings you closer to who you really are.

When you live this way, your actions and behaviors line up with living true to yourself, and your decisions guide how you spend your time and energy each day.

When you live intentionally, you become the author of your own story, rather than a passive character.

While reactive living leaves us feeling powerless and unfulfilled, leading to stress and dissatisfaction.

Intention is focused energy

What you focus on expands… you’ve probably heard that saying.

By focusing your attention, you’re creating a driving force that influences how you move through the world.

Unlike simple goals, which focus on specific achievements, intentions set the tone for… where will I place my attention? What am I creating with my life?

From a metaphysical standpoint, intention is seen as an energetic force that shapes reality.

In Wayne Dyer’s amazing book, The Power of Intention, he writes, “Imagine that intention is not something you do, but rather a force that exists in the universe as an invisible field of energy.”

The Power of Intention was one of the first self-help books I completely absorbed. Being someone fascinated by the notion that we’re all energy, I couldn’t put the book down.

He explains, “Our intention creates our reality.”

According to Dyer, the power of intention is not something we acquire but something we connect with by being in harmony with its attributes—kindness, creativity, love, beauty, and abundance.

By consciously directing our thoughts and actions toward these qualities, we align ourselves with the field of intention, allowing us to manifest our highest potential.

He emphasizes that when we shift our attention away from fear and doubt and toward trust and possibility, we open the door to transformation and success.

Setting our intention with prayer

A great way to make our intentions clear to the universe is through the power of prayers and mantras.

As we pray we are making our intentions clear.

Here’s my article on Prayers for Spiritual Growth to help you state your intentions to both yourself and the divine.

And here’s a simple prayer as well:

Thank you for this day. Thank you for being here every step along the way. I welcome your guidance and love as I show up today to fulfill my mission in this life. And then list what you’re grateful for in the moment.

One of the most powerful intentions I say each day to affirm my divine nature is I am that I am.

We’re co-creators

We are co-creators in our lives through the power of our thoughts, emotions, and intentions. What we focus on—whether consciously or unconsciously—shapes our reality.

When we focus clearly on what we want, rather than on fear or doubt, we align ourselves with the creative force of the universe. This alignment allows us to influence outcomes, demonstrating how our thoughts and intentions actively participate in shaping the life we experience.

Benefits of Living with Intention

Oprah Winfrey often said, Intention is everything. I remember the first time I heard that I idea, I thought: What does that mean? What does that look like? What is the benefit of living with intention?

First and foremost, living intentionally enhances your overall well-being because you’re a creator in your life, not a victim. When we embrace that we are co-creators in our lives, there’s a significant mental shift.

In addition, intentional living leads to many positive outcomes in your life…

  • Deep soulful satisfaction and a sense of purpose
  • Increased clarity about your life and where you want it to go
  • Better decision-making since you know where you’re headed
  • More ease and flow

7 Ways to Use the Field of Intention

Our thoughts and emotions carry energy that influences the energy we project and as a result, the energy around us.

When we act with clear and positive intention and energy, we align with opportunities that match our inner vision.

Here are 7 ways to use the field of intention to create results you desire.

1. Set intentions for the day

It’s helpful to set intentions for the day.

Taking small, consistent steps in alignment with our purpose builds momentum and helps you keep your intentions top of mind.

However, intentions must be paired with action to be effective.

For example, before a big meeting, set an intention like I will contribute my ideas with confidence and clarity. These small yet powerful moments of focus help reinforce success.

So, set your intention for a moment in time, and then take action.

There are a number of positive energy apps to help you stay focused on positive outcomes.

2. Be present and engaged with people

Approach relationships with intention too. Focus on being present and engaged with the person you’re with.

Whether with a partner, family member, or friend, setting the intention to listen, understand, and support strengthens emotional bonds and deepens trust.

3. Set goals with intention

While goals provide direction, intentions shape the mindset and energy we bring to our actions.

Goals focus on the future, often tied to external results, while intentions keep us grounded in the present moment.

For example, a goal might be to lose 20 pounds, but an intention would be to nurture a healthier relationship with food and movement.

By focusing on intention, we create sustainable habits that lead to long-term success.

4. Practice mindful awareness

Intentional living allows us to make conscious choices that align with our values. By practicing mindfulness and clarity, we can cultivate a more meaningful life.

Being aware of our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors is a powerful step in setting intentions.

Mindfulness practices such as meditation, journaling, and deep breathing help us tune into our inner desires and align our actions with our true purpose.

5. Aligning intentions with core values

Living with intention requires knowing what truly matters to us.

Identifying core values—such as integrity, kindness, or creativity—helps us make decisions that reflect our authentic selves.

When our actions align with our values, we experience a greater sense of fulfillment and inner peace.

6. Visualize and affirm intentions

Visualization is a powerful tool in turning intentions into reality.

By clearly imagining our desired outcome, we reinforce our belief in its possibility. This practice helps to shift subconscious patterns that may otherwise hold us back.

Create a vision that encapsulates what you believe your soul is here to accomplish in this life. This will serve as a guiding light for your decisions and actions, helping you stay focused on what truly matters to you on a soul level.

One practical exercise is the “as-if” technique.

If your intention is to become more confident in public speaking, visualize yourself delivering a speech with ease. Feel the energy, the applause, and the satisfaction of doing well. Acting as if can accelerate personal transformation.

Also, there’s a process called Chunking that Tony Robbins created that I’ve followed for years. We break our goals into chunks and work on one chunk at a time. It helps manage overwhelm.

7. Intentional communication with others

Many conflicts arise from misunderstandings or reactive responses.

By setting the intention to communicate with patience and empathy, we create a safe space for honest dialogue and resolution.

Seek first to understand... is a good rule of thumb. So before a meeting or conversation, think: My intention is to understand.

Intentional communication promotes emotional well-being and harmony in all types of relationships.

The beauty of intentional living

When you commit to living with intention, the positive impact extends far beyond your personal life. Your conscious choices can create a ripple effect, influencing those around you and contributing to a more conscious world.

There is a soul of the world just as there is to an individual life and we are all interconnected. As we live with intention, the ripple effect of our conscious choices spreads to those around us.

Inspiring others through your example

As you embrace intentional living, you’ll likely inspire others to do the same. Your friends, family, and colleagues may notice the positive changes in your life and become curious about your approach to life.

Not to be preachy with others, but if asked, share your intentional approach to life and how it’s helped you.

Creating positive change in the world

Intentional living often leads to a greater sense of social responsibility. As you become more mindful of your impact on the world, which is called eco-spirituality, you may want to contribute to your community in ways you hadn’t thought of before.

Seeing through your soul’s purpose

Living with intention allows you to carve out a life that meant for your soul’s expression in this life.

By making conscious choices and pursuing your goals, you’re not just improving your own life – you’re setting an example for others that it’s OK to make your soul a priority.
