Sometimes the old way of being in the world… is no longer enjoyable.

Something is off and you think that you might be the reason? I’ve been there.

As someone who has navigated these murky waters and helped others do the same, I understand what’s required to transform one’s life.

I’ve written a book about a caterpillar who doesn’t believe she can be a butterfly…

Because of my own struggle with seeing myself being something different.

Personal transformation occurs when you’re ready.

1. You’re ready for a change

You feel in your gut, that personal transformation is inevitable.

And personal transformation can be scary.

The ancient Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu says in the Tao Te Ching #22:  

“Bent over, you’ll be preserved whole;  When twisted, you’ll be upright;  When hollowed out, you’ll be full;  When worn out, you’ll be renewed;  When you have little, you’ll attain [much]…”

Lao Tzu reminds us that when we feel twisted… it can lead to renewal.

So, next time you have the thought:

I’ve got no idea what I’m going to do…

Remind yourself that feeling confused about your life is the first step to personal transformation and personal growth.

And maybe taking life into your own hands and changing something… will help you.

Transition times in life, like turning 40, are great times to assess if you need a change.

Most importantly, finding yourself is the ultimate goal of personal transformation.

When you’re feeling pulled within, even though your inner world feels turbulent, personal transformation occurs naturally by following the soul.

2. You have more to do with your life

In my experience as a life coach, feeling overwhelmed or confused, often means that you have something more to do with your life.

Something significant.

Whether it’s healing a trauma, suppressed emotions…

This often requires personal transformation.

Or on the other end of the spectrum, you might have something important to achieve like writing a book, starting a new project or venture, or a new relationship.

If you’re lacking motivation, consider if you have something more inside of you waiting to come out.

It’s a time of self discovery.

Remember that you don’t live your life for others, you live it to fulfill the needs of your soul.

Yet, self doubt creeps in because we feel judged for questioning, searching, and wondering.

Here are three soulful reasons why all of these murky emotions are usually the beginning of something better.

3. Your soul wants you to go deeper

If your soul wants you to go deeper, then listen.

What a great jumping off point for self discovery!

And there’s nothing more important in life than the journey to one’s self.

Even though it’s hard as $#&*.

If you feel a deeper longing in your soul, and a drive for something you don’t understand out of life, or a genuine desire for expression and leadership, then lean into the confusion. 

Lean into those feelings because it’s time to go deeper.

You might walk on coals with Tony Robbins, if he does that anymore.

I did it…

Or consider a drumming circle.

And read everything you can find to shed some light on what’s true for you.

Feel lost if you’re lost! Trust that it’s the soul’s way of talking to you.

Don’t you have to wonder about people who think they have all of the answers? I certainly do.

We want answers…

If you’ve ever felt lost in life…

Often, we hate feeling lost because we need certainty.  We want an answer. We want one thing to grasp onto.

Plus, we don’t like the idea of being lost.  The word lost has a negative connotation because it insinuates that we’ve failed, or we’re not quite good enough at life, or we fear we won’t find motivation in life.

However, if you’re in your late 20’s to early 40’s and you don’t know where you’re going, you’re in good company. 

Millennials seek psychotherapy more often than members of Generation X or earlier generations,” says Psychology Today. 

And while therapy is routine for many of us, millennials in particular feel lost in life, confused, and doubtful at times. 

An Atlantic article that begins, “Hello, lost generation,” goes on to say, “There’s no good news in a recession, and no good news in a pandemic.  For millennials, it feels like there is never any good news at all.”

When you feel lost, there’s a lot of pressure to be found. We’re all supposed to have a life path, so they say. We have a longing to know which direction we’re headed.

However, we’ve lost sight of the importance of searching. Searching can be an important first step to begin a life path that’s meant for you.

9 strategies for personal transformation

Here is a list of tools, tips, and techniques to help ease the growing pains of personal transformation.

Remember, your soul is ready for this.

1. Breathe more often

When personal transformation feeling daunting, it’s helpful to breathe because it calms the mind and grounds you.

Use the breath to relax the body and calm the limbic brain (fight or flight).  Again, there are countless breath techniques.  Here’s an easy one that I like:  Inhale 4 counts, exhale for 8 counts. 

It sounds so small, but it’s not.

When you’re lost, you probably hold your breath and that creates anxiety. Instead, be mindful of your breath throughout whatever major life changes are happening.

2. Talk with your spirit guides

Whether this idea is new to you or not, you have an entire spirit team available to help you when you’re feeling lost in life.

Spend time each day asking for soul guidance.

This is essential.

3. Think high vibration

How you think about change and personal transformation will have a direct affect you.

Your thoughts are powerful. Profound thoughts are part of the journey!

Good vibes are not new age nonsense… We feel the energy of our thoughts, emotions, other people, places, etc.

4. Self love habits

Self love will guide you during personal transformation.

As you love yourself more, you don’t judge yourself for being confused and needing change.

Instead, you see personal transformation as part of you soul’s path.

5. Stay in the present moment

Living in the present moment is a KEY coping strategy when going through a personal transformation.

It’s obvious that when you’re not worrying about the future feeling bleak, or regretting the past, you’ll feel more grounded.

Here’s how to stop living in the past to help you bring yourself into the pristine moment.

6. Prayers and Mantras

During personal transformation, prayers and mantras are extremely important for calming the mind and connecting within.

You can recite calming prayers and mantras as a regular way of calming your mind, body, and soul throughout the day.

Find mantras that resonate with YOU or take you to a place you aspire to. Mantras are a great way to fill your brain with positive energy.

7. Soul Care

Soul care is is the work and play you do to care for your unique soul.

The soul needs authentic expression, emotional expression, self-compassion and love, and so much more.

Soul care that comes from a love of being human fosters feelings of self-acceptance and self-forgiveness.

As a soulful person, you’ll also want to keep a journal.

This will be your Soul Journal.

A SOUL JOURNAL helps you connect with the part of you that is eternal, clear, and unique. Use the journal as a mind dump: ask yourself what you need, how you feel, what you’re thinking about. Just get it out.

8. Meditation Apps

There are apps to help you meditate in a melodious way.

These apps help you improve sleep, reduce anxiety, improve focus, and people claim a number of other benefits.

Meditation will help you when you’re feeling uncomfortable with the idea of personal transformation.

Meditation is an important part of self care.

9. Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping)

I’ve personally used tapping or the Emotional Freedom Technique in my own life and I recommend it to clients as well as my own sons! It’s a proven technique for moving emotional energy out of the body.

Tapping can be useful for alleviating any stress around change.

Emotional wellbeing is key to finding your way in life since we know what is happening to us through our authentic emotions.

For spiritual freedom, we must concurrently be freeing ourselves emotionally.

Final thoughts

Personal transformation is uncomfortable for most of us, but it can also be the prelude to a greater life.

Typically, feeling lost is a prelude to the inner work. If we’re were completely satisfied, we would do nothing right?

However, take comfort in knowing that there’s a path that’s meant for you.

Don’t let a family member or limiting beliefs tell you what’s right for you. Have the self esteem to know what is right for you.

You’ve been called into this life to use your talents and gifts in a way that’s unique to you. There’s nothing random about your life.

Stay open to what’s best for you, enjoy the search, be OK with being stuck for a time, and dream of what great future you’re creating. It’s all part of the process.

Personal transformation is the beginning of finding yourself.
