The Importance of Positive Emotions
Positive emotional responses have been shown by researchers to contribute to countless positive outcomes such as longevity, better immune function, less discomfort, and, obviously, better health (Richardson, 2006). Researchers could use positive emotions for measuring happiness if it was related to the relationship between them. In fact, positive emotions can be essential in the life of a man to flourish.
In my work I teach that thoughts create emotions. So, it’s important to choose your thoughts carefully and practice thinking habits that promote positive emotions.
Choosing positive vibe thoughts makes a different.
This includes doing the emotional work, so that you’re healing the emotions underneath, including anger.
Positive emotion
A positive feeling is an emotion that is associated with pleasure, happiness, and well-being.
Some examples of positive feelings include joy, love, hope, satisfaction, and gratitude.
Positive feelings can have a number of benefits, including improving our physical and mental health, boosting our immune system, and making us more resilient to stress.
They can also help us connect with others, build stronger relationships, and achieve our goals.
Improved Physical Health
The National Institute of Health writes in News In Health (NIH), āWhile earlier research suggests an association between positive emotions and health, it doesnāt reveal the underlying mechanisms,ā says Dr. Richard J. Davidson, a neuroscientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. āTo understand the mechanisms, I think it will be crucial to understand the underlying brain circuits.ā
The article goes on to state, “By using brain imaging, Davidson and others have found that positive emotions can trigger ārewardā pathways located deep within the brain, including in an area known as the ventral striatum.
Individuals who are able to savor positive emotions have lasting activation in the ventral striatum,ā Davidson says. āThe longer the activation lasts, the greater his or her feelings of well-being.ā Continued activation of this part of the brain has been linked to healthful changes in the body, including lower levels of a stress hormone.”
What are emotions?
The American Psychology Association states, “Emotions are conscious mental reactions (such as anger or fear) subjectively experienced as strong feelings usually directed toward a specific object and typically accompanied by physiological and behavioral changes in the body.”
In my experience coaching people for over 25 years, studying emotional intelligence and emotional well being, I’m not convinced that emotions are conscious.
Emotions, like our thoughts, can be habitual in nature. Meaning, A situation happens and we immediately feel B emotion. We don’t realize it. It’s often happening below our conscious awareness.
Many people I ask don’t know how they feel much of the time. They know they feel agitated and the body feels flushed, prickly, heavy, like a lump in the throat or stomach… but they have to think a bit to identify the feeling.
Negative emotions
In A New Earth, Eckhart Tolle describes a negative emotion this way…
“An emotion that is toxic to the body interferes with its balance in our harmonious functioning. Fear, anxiety, anger, bearing a grudge sadness, hatred or intense, dislike, jealousy, and envy, all disrupt, the energy flow through the body, affect the heart, the moon system, digestion production of hormones, and so on.”
Positive and negative emotions
Overall, positive emotions give us energy, while negative emotions lower our energy.
When we are experiencing positive emotions, we feel happier and more alive. We’re less tired and able to accomplish more.
Conversely, when we have negative feelings, we tend to feel tired, run down, overwhelmed, and we function at a lower level.
Feelings wheel
A number of mental health practitioners use the Feelings Wheel.
The feelings wheel is a tool used to help people identify and understand their feelings. It is a circular diagram with different emotions represented by different colors and locations on the wheel.

The feelings wheel can be used by individuals, couples, or families to help them communicate about their feelings and to develop coping strategies for dealing with difficult emotions.
The emotions wheel was created by Robert Plutchik, a psychologist who studied emotions. Plutchik believed that there are eight basic emotions: anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise, anticipation, trust, and joy. He also believed that these emotions can be combined to create more complex emotions.
My favorite tool for identifying positive emotions and feelings was designed by Gloria Wilcox and it’s called the Feelings Wheel. This outstanding tool is widely used to help us pinpoint not only the high level emotion, but the feelings underneath.
Ms. Wilcox says that the Feelings Wheel is “A Tool for Expanding Awareness of Emotions and Increasing Spontaneity and Intimacy.”
Here is the Feelings Wheel PDF for you to use on yourself, your kids, and whomever else you’re hoping to understand better!
