A Complete Guide to Self-love: Make Your Soul Smile

soul alignment, soul connection, spirit guides, sensitive soul, what is your spirit

Self-love is essential to your soul’s expansion.

As a soul coach with over 25 years of experience and author of The Butterfly Silhouette: 12 Principles for Following Your Soul Where It Must Go (winner of the San Francisco Book Festival in both Spirituality and Poetry categories, 2012), I’ve learned that self-love requires depth. It’s about loving yourself truly, deeply.

And, self-love isn’t selfish. It’s necessary. You can’t fulfill your soul’s purpose while rejecting yourself. You can’t show up for others when you’re running on empty.

This guide will show you how to love yourself from a soul perspective, embrace your imperfection, and make self-love a practice, not just a good idea.

What Is Self-Love?

Self-love is the practice of accepting yourself completely, treating yourself with compassion, and honoring your soul’s needs through healthy boundaries, self-care, and authentic living.

Self-love is an internal relationship. It’s how you talk to yourself when no one’s listening. It’s whether you honor what you need or abandon yourself to please others. It’s recognizing that your soul is your true self and treating yourself with consistent kindness.

Your soul is yourself. When you love your soul, you’re loving the essence of who you are. The part that’s divine, eternal, and here to learn and grow.

Here is my favorite affirmation for self-love and self-acceptance.

Self-Love and Your Soul

Growing self-love is soul work. It’s what the soul needs you to do. When you love yourself, you’re honoring yourself as a whole person.

The soul doesn’t demand perfection. It says: You’re human. You’ll stumble. Keep going. I love you anyway.

This perspective changes everything. This perspective changes everything. You stop criticizing yourself for not being stronger, smarter, faster.

You stop comparing yourself to others who seem to have it all figured out. You remember that your journey is yours alone. No one else is walking your path. No one else has your lessons to learn or your gifts to give.

You’re a divine being having a human experience. Both parts matter. The divine and the human. The light and the shadow. The strengths and the struggles.

When you love ALL of it, when you love your soul in its entirety, you become free. Free from feeling not enough. Free from self-judgment. Free to be exactly who you are.

Spiritual Guidance

Self-love is one of the most beautiful outcomes of listening to spiritual guidance. When you follow what your soul and Spirit are showing you, self-acceptance naturally deepens because you come from unconditional love. You begin to see yourself the way Spirit/God/Source/Universe sees you.

As a soul coach and author, this is what I’ve witnessed over 25 years: people who learn to receive spiritual guidance stop resisting themselves and the fear-based ego is quieter. Self-love is a product of living close to the soul.

Love Yourself

This is Principle 11 from The Butterfly Silhouette: Love Yourself.

Self-love means accepting ALL of you: the good, bad, and ugly. The parts you’re proud of and the parts you’re still working on. The light and the shadows.

The soul is big enough to hold everything. It doesn’t reject the messy parts. It doesn’t demand perfection. It says: You’re learning. You’re growing. You’re exactly where you need to be.

This is the heart of Principle 11. No one else can walk your path for you. No one else knows what it’s like to be in your shoes, carry your burdens, feel your feelings.

Self-love is embodying: Even with all of this, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

Why Self-Love Matters

Self-love is necessary to fulfill your soul’s destiny. Without it, you can’t hear what your soul needs. You can’t follow where it’s calling you. You’re too busy managing everyone else’s expectations or trying to prove your worth.

When you love yourself, you create space for inner peace. You’re not at war with yourself anymore. You’re not criticizing, judging, or rejecting who you are. It allows you to trust yourself. It allows you to make decisions from a place of alignment rather than fear.

Self-love also enables authentic living. Your life matches who your True Self. You’re not performing for approval or hiding parts of yourself. You’re showing up as yourself, the nooks and crannies, and trusting that’s enough.

Self-love also transforms your relationships. When you love yourself, you give from a full cup, not an empty one. You’re not constantly seeking validation or trying to earn love. You already have love and that changes everything about how you relate to others.

Give Yourself Compassion

This is Principle 5 from The Butterfly Silhouette: Give Yourself Compassion.

The Soul’s Journey

Have compassion for the depth and length of your soul’s journey. It’s not easy to sign up to be in a human body and go through trials, struggles, losses, and heartbreak.

Your journey is long. It’s complex. It winds in ways you didn’t expect. There are detours and setbacks. There are moments when you feel completely lost. There are times when you wonder if you’re doing anything right.

You deserve compassion for how challenging this is.

Not making excuses. Just acknowledging that this journey is genuinely difficult. Compassion… the kind that says: This is difficult. You’re doing your best. You’re learning.

We’re often so hard on ourselves. We expect perfection. We think we should have it all figured out by now. We compare ourselves to others who seem to have their lives together and wonder why we’re still struggling in some areas.

But here’s what we forget: everyone’s struggling with something! Everyone’s learning something. Everyone’s on their own winding path. The soul’s journey isn’t linear. It unfolds in its own way, at its own pace.

Self-Compassion in Practice

Self-compassion is a foundation of self-love.

Psychologist Kristin Neff has researched self-compassion extensively. She identifies three key components: self-kindness (treating yourself gently instead of harshly), common humanity (recognizing that everyone struggles, you’re not alone), and mindfulness (staying present with your pain instead of avoiding it or getting lost in it).

Deepen your understanding of self-compassion

Love Your Divine Nature

You are a divine being. That divinity lives within you.

I am that I am. I am where God is. God is in me.

When you love yourself, you’re loving the divine spark that animates you. The part of you that’s connected to something greater. The eternal essence that exists beyond your physical body.

This doesn’t mean you’re perfect. You’ll struggle. You’ll fail. You’ll make mistakes. That’s part of being human. But your true nature is divine.

Instead of seeing yourself as fundamentally broken or flawed, you see yourself as whole. The struggles, the mistakes, the imperfections, those are just part of the learning process. They don’t diminish you. They don’t make you less worthy of love.

You belong to something greater. You’re not an isolated individual trying to survive in a harsh world. You’re here for a sacred purpose.

Embracing Imperfection

Loving your divine nature means accepting that you’re both divine AND imperfect at the same time.

You don’t have to be perfect to be worthy of love. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t have to be healed, whole, or enlightened. You don’t have to be anything other than what you are right now.

You’re worthy right now. Exactly as you are.

This is what the soul teaches us. The soul doesn’t demand perfection. It says: You’re learning. Keep going. I love you anyway.

Embracing imperfection means recognizing that being human is messy. You’ll say things you regret. You’ll hurt people you care about. You’ll fall short of your own expectations. And that’s okay. That’s not a reason to withhold love from yourself. It’s a reason to offer yourself more compassion.

Practical Ways to Love Yourself

Understanding self-love is one thing. And, self-love takes practice. For Here are concrete ways to build self-love into your daily life.

Practice Self-Care

Self-care is the regular care that allows you to grow self-love.

It’s the daily practices that keep you aligned with your soul and clear of old burdens and energy that no longer serves you.

Self-care means releasing what weighs you down. Regular self-care clears this energy so you can move through life lighter and more self-loving.

Self-care includes setting healthy boundaries. Boundaries protect your energy and honor your deeper needs. This is how you preserve space for what matters.

Self-care means practicing speaking your truth. When you express yourself honestly, you release the burden of pretending. You stop carrying the weight of unexpressed emotions. This authenticity is essential for inner peace.

Self-care is also physical and spiritual. Rest when you need rest. Move your body. Spend time outside. Connect with your soul through meditation, journaling, or simply being still. These practices restore you.

When you care for yourself regularly, you’re not running on empty. You have energy for what you love. You show up as yourself, not depleted. Self-care creates the strong foundation for having a lasting, loving relationship with yourself.

Practice Self-Compassion

Self-compassion isn’t a one-time decision. It’s a daily practice of choosing kindness over criticism.

Start your morning by checking in with yourself: How do I feel today? What do I need? This simple practice creates space for authenticity throughout your day. You’re not just going through the motions. You’re tuning in to your inner experience.

When negative self-talk shows up, and it will, notice it. Don’t judge yourself for having critical thoughts. Just notice them. Then choose something gentler: I’m doing my best. I’m learning. This is hard, and I’m handling it.

Over time, this practice rewires your brain. The critical voice doesn’t disappear completely, but it gets quieter. And the compassionate voice gets stronger.

Practice self-acceptance exercises:

Do Inner Work

Self-love requires looking at the parts of yourself you’ve been avoiding. This is inner work—shadow work, inner child healing, quieting your inner critic.

Shadow work means exploring the parts of yourself you’ve hidden or denied. These shadows hold valuable wisdom. They show you what you’ve rejected about yourself and why. When you bring them into the light with compassion, they lose their power over you.

Inner child healing means reconnecting with younger versions of yourself who still carry pain. Maybe you were hurt as a child. Maybe you didn’t get the love you needed. You can comfort that younger version of you now. You can give them what they didn’t receive then.

Inner critic work means recognizing the harsh voice in your head and choosing something kinder. Your inner critic developed to protect you. It thought if it criticized you first, others’ criticism would hurt less. But now it’s just hurting you. You can thank it for trying to help and choose a more compassionate voice.

Explore these inner work practices:

Practice Self-Forgiveness

You can’t love yourself while holding onto shame and guilt. Forgiveness frees you. It releases the heavy burden of self-judgment and creates space for love.

Self-forgiveness doesn’t mean excusing bad behavior or pretending you didn’t hurt anyone. It means acknowledging what happened, taking responsibility, learning from it, and then letting go of the shame.

Start with this: I forgive myself. If I could have done better, I would have. I’m learning and growing.

Forgiveness is a process, not a one-time event. You might need to forgive yourself many times for the same thing. That’s okay. Keep coming back to compassion. Keep choosing to let go.

Journal for Self-Discovery

Journaling helps you connect with your truth and process your emotions. It gives you a space to be completely honest with yourself without judgment.

Use prompts like:

  • What do I need to forgive myself for?
  • What parts of myself am I rejecting?
  • How can I show myself love today?
  • What would my soul want me to know right now?

Write without censoring yourself. Let whatever wants to come out, come out. You might be surprised by what emerges when you give yourself permission to be honest.

Ask Yourself Questions

Self-reflection deepens self-love. When you ask yourself meaningful questions, you discover what you really think and feel. You learn what matters to you. You understand yourself better.

Ask yourself:

  • Where in my life do I feel unworthy of love?
  • What boundaries do I need to set?
  • How can I be more present with myself?
  • What does my soul need right now?

These questions invite you into deeper relationship with yourself. They help you move beyond surface-level awareness into real self-knowledge.

Use Self-Love Affirmations

Affirmations rewire your brain to think more lovingly about yourself. When you repeat positive statements consistently, you create new neural pathways. You literally change how your brain processes information about yourself.

Say these daily:

  • I deeply and completely love and accept myself.
  • I am worthy of love exactly as I am.
  • I am that I am. I am where God is.
  • I give myself compassion for this journey.
  • I am my own best friend.

Don’t just say them mechanically. Feel them. Let them sink in. Notice what resistance comes up. That resistance is showing you where you don’t yet believe these truths. That’s where the work is.

The Obstacles to Self-Love

Let’s acknowledge what makes this work hard. Understanding the obstacles helps you navigate them.

Fear of Being Selfish

Many people worry that loving themselves means being self-centered or narcissistic. This fear keeps them from prioritizing their own needs.

But self-love and selfishness are different. Self-love is about honoring your worth and caring for your needs. Selfishness is demanding that others meet your needs at their expense. Self-love includes others. Selfishness excludes them.

When you love yourself, you have more to give. You’re not depleted, resentful, or running on empty. You can show up for others from a place of genuine care rather than obligation.

Negative Self-Talk

Your inner critic can be relentless. It tells you you’re not good enough, not doing enough, not enough period. This voice undermines self-love at every turn.

Challenge this voice. Ask: Would I say this to someone I love? If not, don’t say it to yourself.

Notice patterns in your self-talk. Are you always criticizing your appearance? Your intelligence? Your worthiness? These patterns show you where you’ve internalized messages from your past.

Learn to love yourself despite the inner critic

Past Conditioning

You learned how to treat yourself from the people who raised you. If they were critical, you might be critical of yourself. If they withheld love, you might withhold it from yourself.

This isn’t your fault. But it is your responsibility to change it.

Self-love is about reparenting yourself. Giving yourself the kindness, acceptance, and love you didn’t receive. You can’t change your past, but you can change how you treat yourself now.

This takes time and patience. You’re undoing years of conditioning. Be gentle with yourself as you learn new patterns.
