Soul Alignment: How to Align Life With Your Unique Soul
Ever feel like your life looks fine on the outside but feels off on the inside?
That quiet unease is often a sign you’re out of soul alignment—living in a way that doesn’t match who you really are.
As a soul coach for over 25 years, I’ve helped people reconnect with the truth that lives inside them. I offer books and online courses to help people be true to their soul.
You’re here because you want to feel more like yourself again—clearer, calmer, and on purpose.
In this article, you’ll learn what soul alignment actually means and how to gently realign with the life your soul came here to live.
NOTE: I offer an audio program that teaches how to align with your soul.
6 Elements of Soul Alignment
Here I walk you through six ways to align with your soul.
What is soul alignment?
Soul alignment means that living according to your soul’s truth. Specifically, what your soul needs to learn and grow. This includes: self-love, healing the past, emotional wellbeing, and living with purpose.
(While spiritual alignment is alignment of soul with the divine.)
The soul carries the experiences, memories, and wisdom from this life and beyond. Your soul is eternal, connected, and evolving.
When you align with that purpose, your life has more flow. You begin to feel a quiet confidence that you’re on the right path, not because it’s easy, but because your life feels as though it fits you down to your soul.

How do you know when you’re out of alignment?
When you’re not in alignment with your soul, life feels heavier. You might feel tired all the time, even when you’re doing less. You second-guess your decisions, avoid your own voice, or go along with things that don’t sit right.
Sometimes, it shows up as anxiety. Or chronic doubt. Or just this vague sense that something is missing—even when everything looks good from the outside.
That’s your soul tapping you on the shoulder.
You might ask yourself: Why am I doing this? Who am I trying to please? Why does this feel like I’m playing a part instead of being myself?
My favorite book and began my journey into the soul is Thomas Moore’s Care of the Soul. He speaks to ways the soul speaks to us and symptoms of when the soul is restless.
The soul holds the blueprint
Think of your soul as the outline of who you are capable of becoming. It knows what you’re here to learn, create, heal, and offer. It doesn’t demand that you become someone else—it’s asking you to become more you.
This is what soul alignment is all about.
It’s not about following someone else’s five-step plan to enlightenment. It’s about asking: What is right for me? What feels deeply honest to who I am?
That doesn’t mean everything will go smoothly. Even when you’re aligned with your soul, life will challenge you. But you’ll have a different kind of clarity—a knowing that the road you’re on is yours.
What it looks like to be in alignment with your soul
Soul alignment often shows up quietly. You feel settled in your body, even when you’re taking bold steps. You feel a kind of peace that doesn’t depend on external approval. And your actions start matching your values, even when they go against the grain.
Here are a few real-life examples:
- A woman who’s been in corporate for 15 years finally opens her small yoga studio—not because she’s chasing a trend, but because movement and stillness are part of her soul’s rhythm. Her income is less predictable, but her energy is lighter. She feels herself again.
- A man says no to a family legacy of achievement and chooses to become a teacher. Everyone tells him he’s wasting his potential, but he feels more alive in a classroom than he ever did in a boardroom. That’s soul alignment.
- A mother admits that trying to be the “perfect parent” is draining her spirit. She starts setting boundaries, carving out creative time, and letting go of guilt. Her home becomes calmer, not just for her—but for everyone.
- An artist who’s been creating work to please others finally paints what’s been living inside her. She doesn’t know if it’ll sell, but she feels clear and lit up inside. That’s soul alignment.
These aren’t dramatic reinventions. They’re course corrections that bring life back into harmony with the soul’s design.
One way I stay aligned with my soul is to drain my energy each day, so that I’m not carrying heavy energy throughout the day. Here’s a short TikTok video on one technique I use.
Alignment means choosing your soul’s voice
The soul is talking with us all of the time.
It nudges you in the right direction. It shows up in a sudden insight, a dream, or that strange feeling in your chest when you’re going against yourself.
When you begin listening—really listening—you’ll notice how much your soul wants to communicate with you. It might be through silence, nature, writing, or meditation.
It might even come during moments of struggle, transition (or bardo state). But it’s always available.
And when you follow those nudges? That’s alignment.
You’re not letting fear make your decisions. You’re listening to the part of you that’s wise, steady, and loving.
The soul works with your body and mind
Sometimes we think, “If I were different—more disciplined, more creative, more outgoing—then I could live the life I really want.”
But your soul was given the exact body and mind you have for a reason. These are not obstacles—they’re part of your design.
Your quirks, your sensitivities, even your struggles… they are part of your soul’s evolution. They teach you things you need in order to grow.
Alignment doesn’t mean changing who you are. It means working with what you’ve been given in a way that feels true.
The soul is imperfect—just like you
The soul isn’t flawless. It’s not hovering above you in a constant state of bliss. Your soul learns and struggles just like you do. I write more about this in my article about How to Define the Soul.
You don’t have to get it all right to be aligned. You just have to keep asking the right questions and making the best choices you can, based on your soul’s values.
Ask yourself: Am I being honest with myself here? Am I doing this from love or fear? What feels aligned today?
That’s enough.
Realigning with your soul
So how do you return to alignment when you feel lost?
You start by pausing. Get quiet. Journal. Walk. Breathe. Ask your soul: What do you need from me right now?
The answers may not come immediately, but they will come. And when they do, they will feel calm, grounded, and simple. The soul speaks in clarity, not confusion.
You might realize you’ve outgrown something. Or that it’s time to say yes to something you’ve been avoiding. Or that you need more rest, more truth, more space.
And little by little, decision by decision, you begin to realign.
Final thoughts on soul alignment
Your soul is always with you. And it’s here to help you become the truest version of yourself.
When you live in alignment with your soul, life becomes more meaningful. You stop chasing and start listening. You stop performing and start becoming.
And even when life feels hard or uncertain, your soul stays steady.
Because it knows.
