What is a soulmate?
A soulmate is a deep bond that transcends time and space, formed with someone you resonate with on an intuitive soul-level. It is marked by a strong sense of familiarity, belonging, and recognition, often creating the feeling of being emotionally safe, deeply seen, and spiritually aligned with someone who matters to your soul’s journey.
While many people assume a soulmate must be romantic, soulmates can be a life partner, close friend, family member, parent-child bond, or even a pet. A soulmate does not complete you, but instead creates a sacred relational space that helps you become more authentically yourself.
What is a soul connection?
A soul connection is a bond between two souls that feels familiar, significant, and bigger than this lifetime. It’s not about how long you’ve known someone. It’s about recognizing them on a soul level. These connections are often pre-arranged before we come into this life to help each other grow.
Soul Connection vs Soulmate: Key Difference
Soul connections are any souls you recognize across lifetimes, the ones who feel familiar and purposeful in your life. Soulmates are a specific kind of soul connection. They are souls you pre-arranged to travel with closely, working on shared lessons and growing together.
The soulmate is generally a stronger, deeper bond. Every soulmate is a soul connection. Not every soul connection is a soulmate.
How to apply this in real life
If someone consistently leaves you feeling more like yourself, more emotionally safe, and more aligned with your soul’s path (instead of drained, confused, or constantly chasing clarity), that’s a possibility it’s a soulmate. And if the relationship keeps pulling you into growth, self-honesty, and deeper commitment to your life’s direction, that’s another sign you’re in soulmate territory—not just chemistry.
Are soulmates real?
Yes, soulmates are real in the sense that they’re relationships you experience as deeply meaningful, unusually familiar, and connected to your soul’s growth. A soulmate is someone you may share soul lessons with, and the relationship exists to support mutual evolution, emotional safety, and learning, whether that bond shows up as a life partner, friend, family member, child, or even a pet.
Can primary soulmates change?
The main or primary soulmates are prearranged before we come into this life. However, since we have free will, the primary soulmates can change (although not typically) as we evolve or timeline jump and change destinies. Bottom line, who is right for us evolves as we evolve.
For further reading on how we recognize soulmates, and so much more, read Journey of Souls: Case Study of Life Between Lives by Michael Newton Ph.D.
In chapter 14: Preparation for Embarkation he describes a case study where the subject sees their “primary soulmate” and how that looks from their soul’s perspective.

Types of Soulmates and Soul Connections
There are 8 different types of soulmates and soul connections.
Jump to a Soul Connection Type:
Romantic Soulmates
Platonic Soulmates
Soul Ties
Karmic relationships

Family Soulmates
Creative Soulmates
Spiritual Soulmates
1. Romantic Soulmates
These are the soulmates that set our hearts on fire – romantic partners who awaken something deep within us that feels both familiar and extraordinary, and we for sure have similar soul lessons. There’s a magnetic pull toward this person that goes beyond physical attraction; it’s as if your souls are having their own conversation beneath the surface. (And actually, they are!)
You want to share your innermost thoughts, your dreams, your fears – and somehow, being vulnerable with them feels safer than hiding. In the beginning, this relationship can feel so intense that we convince ourselves we need this person to feel complete.
But here’s the beautiful paradox: as your soul matures, you realize that the deepest love comes not from needing someone, but from choosing them from a place of wholeness. When you love someone because you want to share your full, authentic self with them, not because you need them to fill an empty space, the relationship becomes a sacred union rather than a dependency.
Destined closeness
Romantic soulmates carry deep emotional intimacy and a strong sense of destined closeness. These soulmates resonate deeply with your soul, often across lifetimes. You’re meant to travel this life together.
You’re not two halves trying to become whole; you’re two whole souls choosing to walk the same soul path, each supporting the other’s highest good and greatest healing.
I highly recommend that you listen to this episode of Spiritual Medium Rebecca Rosen’s podcast: Repeating Patterns, Soulmates, and Divine Timing | S04.E18 to help you see any patterns you may have with soulmates.

The way it works, is that you upload the app, choose your plan, attend expert sessions, watch educational videos for couples around communication and conflict management to name a few, and do couples exercises.
2. Platonic Soulmates
Platonic soulmates are friends or family members with whom we share an exceptionally deep and meaningful bond, similar to that of a romantic relationship.
However, there’s not a physical draw… typically. Which is convenient.
It’s that friend or associate that you just know on a deep level you’re supposed to walk this path for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.

3. Soul ties
A soul tie is an emotional and energetic bond between two people, that comes from intense shared experiences in the current life. They can feel binding, even long after a connection ends.
Soul ties are unique in how they create lingering emotional intensity—sometimes helpful, sometimes harmful.
4. Karmic relationships
Karmic relationships are intense, emotionally charged, and have a push/pull dynamic to them. These connections feel like work, not the fun kind. They often feel turbulent, teaching you through challenges rather than comfort and safety.
While they’re spiritual, they’re not always meant to last. Read more about karmic relationships
5. Twin Flames
Twin flames are believed to be two halves of the same soul, separated to learn and evolve. The connection is magnetic, intense, and often triggering—pushing each person toward deep healing and transformation.
Twin flame relationships are spiritual mirrors, helping you face your shadows and awaken to a higher version of yourself.
6. Family Soulmates
Our children can be soul teachers for us. Just as we can be for our parents. And vise versa, except that I’ve heard more about children being soul teachers.
A soul teacher is someone who is helping you learn certain specific lessons.
7. Creative Soulmates
These soulmates can be fellow creators, collaborators, or mentors who ignite our creativity and inspire us to pursue our passions and create more!
I’ve had many along my path and cannot imagine my life without these deep soul connections.
8. Spiritual Soulmates
Spiritual soul connections are kindred spirits who share our spiritual sensibilities. Meaning, we vibe spiritually, if that makes sense. You know that feeling when you just nod your head and think: Exactly… I couldn’t have said it better myself.
They offer guidance, support, and companionship on our spiritual journey. They helps us with spiritual growth and spiritual freedom because they are on a similar path.
Thank goodness for this kind of soul connection.
The Science Behind Soul Connections
While the main soulmates and soul connections are pre-arranged before you enter this life, there are also fascinating scientific theories to help you understand who you pick on a human level versus soul level.
As I say above, since we have free will, and we can fast track, evolve more quickly, or timeline jump, the prearranged soulmates can change. These possibilities are multi-layered.
Attachment theory and soul connections
In Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find—and Keep—Love, authors Amir Levine and Rachel Heller explore how early relationships shape our ability to form deep bonds.
Attachment theory suggests that individuals develop attachment styles—secure, anxious, or avoidant—based on childhood interactions with caregivers.
I’ve been in a relationship with an avoidant person for a short time and all I can say is… get ready to do major work.
No thank you. Our attachment styles influence how we connect with others later in life, including soul connections.
Secure individuals tend to form deep, stable bonds, while anxious or avoidant people may struggle with trust and emotional closeness. Understanding attachment theory helps us recognize our patterns and cultivate healthier, more fulfilling soul connections.

Neuroscience and deep emotional bonds
Neuroscience reveals that deep emotional bonds, including soul connections, are rooted in brain chemistry.
Harvard professors and couples therapists, Richard Schwartz and Jacqueline Olds state in Love and the Brain, from Harvard Medical School…
“Love may well be one of the most studied, but least understood, behaviors. More than 20 years ago, the biological anthropologist Helen Fisher studied 166 societies and found evidence of romantic love—the kind that leaves one breathless and euphoric—in 147 of them. This ubiquity, said Schwartz, an HMS associate professor of psychiatry at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass., indicates that “there’s good reason to suspect that romantic love is kept alive by something basic to our biological nature.”
When we form a strong connection, our brain releases oxytocin, often called the “love hormone,” which fosters trust and attachment.
Studies show that the limbic system, particularly the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, plays a crucial role in processing emotions and social bonding.
The reward system, involving dopamine, reinforces positive interactions, making us crave connection with specific individuals.
Furthermore, mirror neurons allow us to empathize deeply, creating an almost telepathic understanding between connected souls.
In Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love, Dr. Sue Johnson writes about her successful approach to couples therapy called Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.
Sign you’ve met a soulmate
Here are some signs that you’ve met a soulmate.
Soulmate Synchronicity
Synchronicity is a meaningful coincidence. These kinds of meaningful experiences are a theme in soul mate relationships.
It’s absolutely remarkable and proof of how intelligent this universe is.
In my own life, in my soul mate relationships, there is one synchronicity after another to show me spirit’s hand in the relationship.
The turning left instead of right.
The person you meet in the strangest way… who just happens to introduce you to your soulmate.
Soulful eyes
If the eyes are the window to the soul, it’s no surprise that you may always remember the first time you looked into a soul mate’s eyes or a deep soul connection’s eyes.
It’s wild. It’s as though you see their soul as you look at their eyes. You see things others may miss. You know them instantly. It’s mind expanding for sure.
There’s a mutual acceptance
Ideally, soulmates embrace each other exactly as they are, flaws and all, without judgment or criticism.
Most of the time…
On a soul level… this is actually true because there’s such a deep connection that transcends the human experience.
However, on a human level the acceptance part may be something you continue working on as the relationship evolves and the souls evolve.
You will be a similar vibration
You will be a similar vibration frequency as your soulmate.
That’s how the universe works. Like attracts like… vibrationally.
This is why, if you’re doing the work to raise your vibration, you may no longer resonate with your soulmate after you’ve done the work… if they haven’t.

Can you have more than one soulmate?
Yes, we can have multiple soulmates throughout life. Again, there’s no magic number. For you, it could be one person… or five people throughout your life.
Soulmate is a term so commonly used that maybe it’s lost some of its meaning. He’s my soulmate… until you meet the next soulmate?
In fact, we choose our soulmates before we come into this life.
In SoulMates: Honouring the Mysteries of Love and Relationship, Thomas Moore describes soulmates in this way:
“Someone to whom we feel profoundly connected, as though the communicating and communing that takes place between us were not the product of intentional efforts but rather a divine grace.”

FAQ – Soulmates
What is a romantic soulmate?
Romantic soulmates share deep emotional intimacy and a strong sense of destined closeness. These soulmates are those who resonate deeply with your soul, often across lifetimes.
Can you have more than one soulmate?
Yes, absolutely. We typically choose several before each life to help us along our soul’s path. There’s no magic number, but tends to be between two and five soulmates. You might feel one deeply for a time, then meet another who resonates differently as you grow.
How can I tell if someone is my soulmate?
Sometimes you recognize a soulmate through their eyes—there’s a depth or familiarity that stirs something in you. But it may be something else entirely, like a feeling, a phrase, or timing you prearranged before this life. However it shows up, you’ll likely feel emotionally safe, deeply seen, and spiritually aligned.
What is a platonic soulmate?
A platonic soulmate is someone you love without romantic or sexual attraction. The connection is soulful, supportive, and emotionally intimate. You feel safe being fully yourself, and there’s mutual understanding that doesn’t need words. These relationships are often stable and offer the kind of love that supports your soul’s journey without needing to be romantic.
How do I know when a soulmate relationship ends?
A soul connection may end when its purpose is complete. You might feel emotionally detached, out of sync, or simply different than you once did. There’s often no drama—just a quiet shift. While it can be painful, it’s also a sign of growth. When the energy between you no longer supports your path, it’s time to let go with love and gratitude.
Final thoughts
A soulmate is a profound relationship that we’ve prearranged before coming into this life.
Soul mates are those people who help us feel like we belong and help us grow.
Some soul connections are karmic, and therefore extremely challenging and we need to be aware of the pitfalls.
Walking through life along our soul’s path with a soul mate is a beautiful experience… and one of the things that makes life worth living.
