Sound Healing: What It Is and Why It’s So Great

sound healing, frequency, sound waves,

Do you want to feel calmer and more grounded, but your mind is chatty, your body won’t settle down, and you’re feeling… disconnected from Source?

In my work as a soul coach, and in listening to many sessions with spiritual mediums, I’ve been told repeatedly that sound healing is a very powerful healing therapy to help people clear energy, heal trauma, and grow spiritually.

If you’re exploring sound healing, you’re looking for a clear explanation of what it is, how it works, and how the vibrations help you feel lighter and more aligned.

This article will show you how sound healing supports your emotional health, clears your energy field, and helps you move through stress, sensitivity, and internal pressure with more ease.

What is sound healing?

Sound healing uses vibration and frequency to help your body and mind settle into a more balanced state.
It works well because your nervous system responds to sound instantly, often faster than it does to breath work or meditation.

It’s a form of energy healing.

Tools like binaural beats, specific frequencies, singing bowls, chimes, tuning forks, and gongs create steady frequencies that help your body shift out of stress and into a calmer frequency.

It’s important to note that spiritual growth and emotional healing go hand in hand. The is because as we heal emotionally, we’re lighter and able to enjoy our soul’s full expression.

Said another way, as we lighten our emotional load, we bring more light into the body… and ultimately into the world.

The power of sound resources

Tryshe Dhevney is a sound healer and here is her Crystal Bowl Soundtrack on Apple. There are many sound tracks, but this one is my favorite and I listen daily.

There is something that feels deeply healing and soothing to my brain about crystal bowl frequencies.

Also, psychic medium Rebecca Rosen discusses the power of sound therapy in her podcast episode: Unlocking the Power of Sound with Tryshe Dhevney, S03.E06.

If you don’t have time to listen, she lists the key points. Also, Tryshe shares advice on using sound as a tool for personal healing and growth, healing trauma and manifestation.

How sound healing affects your nervous system

Your body responds to steady high-vibration sound through a process called entrainment. According to Dr. David Hawkins in Power versus Force, entrainment refers to when a weaker energy field automatically rises to match a higher energy field when in proximity. Or, vise versa.

For example, if you’re in a bad mood and you walk into a museum of beautiful art that feels uplifting, your energy will entrain to the higher frequency of the art.

As this happens, your breath eases and your muscles relax without much effort on your part. This shift creates the internal stability you need to feel clearer, more grounded, and emotionally balanced.

Sound healing and ear ringing or spiritual sensitivity

People who experience ear ringing during energetic shifts, or have left or right ear ringing for unknown reasons, or for spiritual reasons, may feel calmer when they work with controlled sound frequencies.

Personally, I’ve experienced left ear ringing since my husband passed years ago, that I believe has a spiritual origin, not a medical one. See my post on spiritual meaning of ear ringing.

I’ve found calming, soothing sound vibrations extremely relaxing and comforting, whether it’s specifically sound healing or other calming frequencies like Solfeggio frequencies.

When your internal energy is active, outside tones can help stabilize the sensation. Sound healing gives your system a steady vibration to follow, which can create clarity instead of confusion.

Here’s a related article since my use of sound (Solfeggio frequencies) helps me connect with Spirit and my spirit guides.

How sound healing helps emotional release

Emotions settle in the body, and some of them stay longer than we expect. Sound healing helps those emotions move because vibration loosens what’s been held tight.

Certain frequencies can bring up unexpected feelings. This is similar to what happens in emotional release therapies, where you facilitate the body and mind’s ability to release emotional energy. The link above lists over 50 emotional release methods I’ve used and suggest to help people feel lighter and less burdened.

When the vibration reaches deeper layers of tension, your system softens and opens. This is why many people cry, exhale deeply, or feel a shift they can’t quite name after a sound bath.

I use both color therapy and sound healing, at different times or different days to release emotion in different ways.

What science says about healing sound frequencies

Early studies by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) show that listening to steady tones can help people feel less stressed and more relaxed. Researchers have also found that sound can calm the nervous system, helping the heart and breathing slow down, so the body feels more settled.

The National Library of Medicine also reports a study where people who experienced Tibetan singing bowl sessions had calmer hearts and reported feeling less anxious than those who didn’t try the bowls or who did regular muscle relaxation exercises.

The research is still growing, but the pattern is consistent: sound has a real effect on how we feel. This gives a solid foundation for why so many people experience relief, release, and deeper presence during sound healing.

The spiritual benefits of sound healing

Sound has always been part of spiritual practice, from chanting to mantras to drumming. Vibration creates a sense of connection both inward and upward.

Many spiritually sensitive people notice sound healing heightens their intuition. You may feel more open, more grounded, or more aware of what your body has been trying to tell you.

If you’ve experienced spiritual sensitivity like ear ringing, sound healing can give that sensitivity a clear channel. It can calm overwhelming sensations while helping you feel more connected to your energy field.

Is listening to an audio as effective as in person?

Solfeggio frequencies and binaural beats would be listened to on your own. (See below)

As for the bowls, chimes and gongs, there is not conclusive data on this, but from what I’ve read, in person sessions are more effective than listening with headphones because the sound vibrations are so much fuller when the actual bowl is sitting on your body!

It makes sense, that if you can feel the vibration directly, and it’s physically running through you, that the frequencies will be more impactful.

However, listening to an audio of Tibetan bowls or gongs with headphones or air pods is going to be beneficial too! It’s certainly better than doing nothing at all and these sounds are effective at relaxing the mind and body. Not everyone has the time or money to go to a sound healing session!

The role of vibrational sound therapy

Vibrational sound therapy focuses on using specific tones that match certain emotional or energetic patterns.
It’s especially helpful for people who feel overwhelmed, overstimulated, or emotionally stuck.

This form of therapy works well because the body understands vibration faster than words. The sound helps release tension without forcing you to dive into heavy emotional work.

Many people combine vibrational sound therapy with breathwork or meditation for a deeper effect.
The combination can help you address what’s happening with you from multiple angles.

Tools used in sound healing

Different tools create different effects, and each one supports the body in its own way. Here are a few that show up most often to create the experience of a sound bath.

A sound bath is simply a session where you are immersed in healing vibrations. You’re surrounded by steady tones from instruments like singing bowls, gongs, and chimes.

Crystal Bowls

Crystal bowl produce a sound and frequency that quickly settles the mind and body.

Again, here’s the soundtrack I offer above in this article. Tryshe Dhevney is a popular sound healer. Here is her Crystal Bowl Soundtrack on Apple. There are many sound tracks, but this one is my favorite. My mind almost instantly relaxes with these sounds.

I listen while on walks or doing regular chores at home.

Binaural Beats

According to Psychology Today, “When two tones of slightly different frequencies are played in separate ears simultaneously (usually through headphones), the human brain perceives the creation of a new, third tone, whose frequency is equivalent to the difference between the two tones being played. This auditory illusion is called a binaural beat.”

Some meditations combine binaural beats with solfeggio frequencies to have a greater affect on healing.

Solfeggio Frequencies

“Solfeggio frequencies are a set of specific sound patterns (ie: 174 Hz, 528 Hz, 963 Hz) believed to possess unique properties for mental, physical, and emotional well-being.”

This would be something you would listen to on your own.

Personally, I listen to soundtracks with Solfeggio frequencies almost every day for meditation or while I’m grounding my energy. Finding the right soundtrack is key… there’s a large variety of options here. Find the one that resonates with you. The frequency that feels soothing to you.

Here is Apple Music’s Solfeggio Frequencies to choose from.

Singing bowls

Their steady, circular tones help you relax quickly. People often feel a warm, settling sensation in their chest or stomach.

Tuning forks

Tuning forks bring vibration directly into specific points of the body. People report they are helpful for clearing mental fog, releasing pressure behind the eyes, or easing jaw tension.

Chimes

Chimes create soft tones that help you reset your breath and slow down your thoughts. They’re especially calming if you tend to carry stress in your neck and shoulders.

Gongs

Gongs create deep, powerful waves of sound that move through your entire body. They help release deeper emotional layers and support long-term tension patterns.

How sound healing supports emotional wellness

Your emotions respond to rhythm, tone, and consistency. Sound healing uses those elements to help your system unwind.

People often feel lighter after a sound session because the vibration helps the body release stored pressure.
This can support people working through grief, stress, overwhelm, or burnout.

Sound healing also helps you recognize emotions you’ve been pushing down.
When your body feels safe, feelings can rise gently instead of crashing through.

How sound healing clears your energy field

Your energy field reacts to sound the same way your body does. Vibration creates movement, which helps clear stagnant or heavy energy.

This is helpful if you’re feeling drained, scattered, or disconnected. The sound helps you come back to center, which makes your energy feel more stable.

People often describe this as feeling “lighter” or “more open” after a session. That’s your system settling into a clearer state.

How sound healing supports personal transformation

Sound healing helps you notice truths you’ve been avoiding. When stress softens, clarity rises.

This makes it easier to make choices, recognize patterns, and take steps toward the life you actually want. Sound healing doesn’t force change; it creates space for it.

When your energy is aligned, you have more courage to move forward. You also trust yourself more because you’re listening from a calmer place.

Simple ways to try sound healing at home

You don’t need special equipment to start. You can use recordings, instruments, or your own voice.

Choose a tone that feels steady and calming. Let it fill the room while you breathe slowly. If emotions come up, allow them, breathe and ground your energy as you hold the emotion in the body.

I do this regularly and offer a soul alignment program to help people clear their energy and connect with their soul and spirit team.

Final thoughts

Sound healing is one of the simplest ways to release stress, clear emotional pressure, and reconnect to yourself.
It reaches places inside us that talking, thinking, or analyzing can’t always reach.

Whether you’re exploring ear ringing, emotional release, energy alignment, or spiritual growth, sound healing can support your journey.

It helps your system unwind so you can move forward with more clarity and ease.
