What is spiritual freedom?

Spiritual freedom is the ability to live authentically, aligning your thoughts and actions with your deepest values and beliefs.

It means shedding the constraints imposed by societal norms, others’ judgments, and even your own self-limiting beliefs, because a higher power guides you.

Whatever that higher power may be for you.

Be Your True Self

It’s about embracing your true self, flaws and all…. and your connection to something bigger than you.

It’s the courage to unapologetically pursue your passion and purpose, free from fear, guilt, or shame.

It ain’t easy… but the soul needs this from you.

When you achieve this level of inner emancipation, you experience a profound sense of lightness, joy, and fulfillment.

10 Ways to Cultivate Spiritual Freedom

The quest for real freedom begins with deep self-exploration and a willingness to question the beliefs that have shaped your worldview.

Curiosity… and openness are key here.

Only by gaining clarity on your core identity and values and shedding prior narratives can you start living with intention and emotional authenticity.

This self-inquiry requires immense courage, as it means dismantling deeply ingrained patterns and reimagining your life’s purpose.

Humans are creatures of habit says Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit.

However, the rewards of this inner work are immeasurable – a life of fulfillment, peace, and spiritual emancipation.

1. Cultivate self-awareness

Your true self rests in the soul.

You can get to know this deep and true aspect of you by reading my post on what it means to be soulful.

You can do further self-exploration through journal prompts for self-love, spending time in nature, or practicing mindfulness meditation.

As you peel back the layers, you’ll gain invaluable self-knowledge about your authentic emotions, values, needs, and soul guidance.

This is the foundational work that will allow you to embark on the path of inner freedom with clarity and intention.

You can cultivate deep self-awareness and self-discovery through regular self-reflection practices.

2. Question your beliefs

Once you develop a strong sense of self-awareness, it’s time to critically examine the beliefs that have shaped your reality up until this point.

We all hold limiting beliefs instilled by our family, culture, or past experiences. However, these beliefs may no longer serve our highest good.

With courage and objectivity, question every belief, no matter how deeply ingrained. Ask yourself: Is this still true for me?

Does this belief empower me or hold me back?

Be willing to let go of antiquated notions in order to make space for spiritual growth and transformation.

3. Define your values

Your core values act as an inner compass, guiding your choices, behaviors, and direction in life. Perhaps through self-reflection, you’ve already gained clarity on these sacred principles.

If not, spend time thoughtfully defining what matters most to you: integrity, kindness, creativity, adventure, and so on.

Once clearly articulated, let these values be the foundation steering you towards freedom.

Living soul-centric and in harmony with your values cultivates profound inner peace and fulfillment.

4. Set boundaries

Boundaries are extremely important for your spiritual growth.

And you need to have boundaries with everyone, even soul connections.

While my work is focused on being your true self, I’m constantly challenged about where to draw boundaries.

It’s NOT black and white.

However, as you connect more deeply to your soul and your authentic self and values, you’ll gain confidence in setting firm boundaries.

This is a process… because you’ll feel guilty at times for setting boundaries.

You’ll be afraid to tell people how you really feel.

Learn to lovingly but assertively say “no” to demands, expectations, or requests that violate your integrity or wellbeing.

Setting healthy boundaries is an act of self-preservation that allows you to devote your precious time and energy to what’s truly important.

Don’t be afraid to disappoint others in service of living in spiritual alignment.

A mantra to help you

Here’s a prayer or mantra I say regularly to help me be clear on boundaries…

I depend soley on myself and God for my happiness, security, and inner peace.

5. Embrace Your Imperfections

One of the greatest keys to freedom is releasing the need for perfection and learning to embrace your beautiful imperfections.

We all have flaws, weaknesses, and aspects of ourselves that we perceive as inadequate or undesirable.

However, this self-judgment only breeds insecurity, shame, and spiritual bondage. What if you approached yourself with radical self-compassion instead?

Lovingly accept all parts of yourself, the light and dark, and you’ll experience immense self-acceptance.

6. Pursue Your Passion

Within each of us lies a passion – an activity, craft, or calling that ignites our soul with inspiration and fulfillment.

Perhaps it’s something you were born to do, or a newfound interest that fills you with profound joy.

Whatever your passion, free yourself from fears, doubts, and limiting beliefs in order to boldly pursue it.

Devoting yourself to what you love most, simply for the sake of doing it, is spiritual freedom personified.

7. Practice Mindfulness

Staying present in the here and now is a powerful aspect of true freedom.

Mindfulness practices like meditation, breathwork, or simply bringing awareness to daily activities like eating or walking, anchor you in the profound peace of the present moment.

As you release attachment to what was or what will be, you liberate yourself to fully experience the precious gifts of each moment.

8. Let Go of Others’ Judgments

How often do you filter your choices, words, or actions through the lens of how you’ll be perceived by others?

We’re socially conditioned to seek approval and validation from those around us.

But chasing others’ acceptance traps us in a prison of conformity, squelching our uniqueness and soulfulness.

A key aspect of freedom is releasing the need for outside approval and having the courage to stay true to yourself, no matter who judges or misunderstands you.

9. Be of Service

From a soulful perspective, the soul is here to fulfill its purpose.

When you devote yourself to something greater than your own interests, you transcend the ego and experience a profound sense of interconnection and purpose.

This could mean volunteering, activism, random acts of kindness, or simply contributing your unique gifts to the world.

Being in service to others, nature, or a cause you believe in opens your heart, expands your perspective, and allows you to embody freedom in a meaningful way.

10. Embody Gratitude

Ultimately, one of the greatest pathways to spiritual liberation is to embody an attitude of gratitude in each present moment.

When you appreciate the abundance before you with a grateful heart, you release anxieties about the future and regrets about the past.

You open yourself to the richness available right here, right now. Living in a state of gratefulness aligns you with the infinite flow of the universe and the soul.

Final thoughts

The journey towards freedom is one of profound personal transformation in the human experience – the feat of aligning your outer life with your innermost truth.

While moments of awakening and emancipation can be powerfully uplifting, it’s an ongoing spiritual practice to retain that enlightened state.

By mindfully applying these steps, you can gradually dissolve the chains that have bound you and live with increasing authenticity and inner peace.
