Understanding Victim Energy: Breaking Free From Your Past

|
taking charge of your life. creator energy,

From what I understand, one of my lessons in this life is to heal victim energy. So, I’ve taken a big interest in it and made huge strides.

Victim energy keeps you stuck, feeding cycles of blame and shame, and in negativity. It stops us from living the empowered, fulfilling life we desire.

As a soul coach and someone who is tired of victim energy draining my energy, I’ve studied victim consciousness for decades.

You’re here to understand victim energy, its effects, and real ways to overcome it. Good for you! Because it’s brutal IMHO.

By the end of this article, you’ll know how to transform victim energy into empowerment and reclaim your power as a creator, not a victim.

What Is Victim Energy?

Victim energy is when a person feels they have little control over what’s happening in their life. People who feel this way often…

  • Blame others or events for their challenges.
  • Are afraid of making needed changes. They’re not using their power.
  • Carry shame more than others.
  • Avoid taking responsibility for their choices or outcomes.
  • Feel trapped, frustrated, or hopeless at times.

Victim energy can come from past trauma, stress, or learned behaviors.

“It is what it is...” is a popular saying; however, is there really nothing you can do?

There’s a big difference between acceptance of things we can’t change… and having the courage to change the things that we can.

The Serenity Prayer tells us that!

While it’s okay to feel powerless at times, staying in that mindset keeps you stuck. The key is recognizing it’s not who you are—it’s part of your purpose to heal it.

How Victim Energy Feels

Recognizing victim energy in your life is the first step toward overcoming it. Below are common signs….

But first, a head’s up…

Victim energy does NOT mean you’re moping around with your head down and always feeling sorry for yourself. IT’S NOT THAT. You may be a very strong and confident person much of the time! But, underneath that can be this quiet feeling of victimhood. So, please keep this in mind.

Examples of victim thinking

So that you’ll recognize victim energy within yourself, below are examples of what I call, victim thinking.

Don’t feel bad if you recognize your own thoughts in there…. this is actually good news because it means you’re self-aware!

Warning… these victim thoughts are behind the scenes. You’re not thinking them all of the time… they rear their ugly heads when you least expect them!!

I have to work so hard for very little results.

I feel so frustrated all the time by how many things go wrong.

Why can’t something go right?

I’m angry that no one will help me.

I’m angry that I have to work hard for a few results while other people get quick results and are stupid!

I feel like I’m constantly pushing this rock up a hill and I’m tired.

Why is this so hard?

I feel stuck here and I don’t know what to do.

I won’t be able to fix this.

I have to go along with what others want because I don’t want to upset them.

I’m ashamed for feeling this way.

I’m not doing enough.

Blaming and Shaming

Blame and shame are two hallmarks of being a victim, so when you’re notice yourself going there… gently catch yourself and choose a more empowered stance.

You might think, I failed because of the people I work with, I’m too busy, I’m not smart enough... etc. Do you hear the victim energy in those words? It’s not your fault! But, now that you know… you can squash them when they creep in.

This mindset gives power to others while keeping you in a reactive state instead of taking charge.

Negative Self-Talk

Victim energy brings with it negative self-talk.

Telling yourself, “I’m not good enough,” or “Nothing ever works out for me,” programs your brain for victimhood and creates feelings un being unworthy.

These thoughts can become patterns that block growth and reinforce a belief that change isn’t possible.

Fear of Change

Change can feel scary, but fear of trying new things often keeps people in the same unfulfilling situations. Fear makes challenges seem impossible to overcome and stops you from taking risks that could improve your life.

The best selling book, Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway by Susan Jeffers is a great resource for facing fear and one that I’ve used personally for years.

Seeking Sympathy Instead of Solutions

You might look for comfort by telling others your problems, hoping they’ll validate your feelings. While this might feel good temporarily, it doesn’t solve the root issue or empower you to move forward.

Not Taking Ownership

Procrastination or deflecting responsibility can show up when victim energy takes over. As a victim, you avoid facing what must be done. You can get in a downward spiral of avoiding your self and your truth.

The Cost of Staying in Victim Energy

Holding onto victim energy keeps you from learning and growing, which is why the soul is here. It’s a major life mistake to hold onto victim energy.

While it’s challenging to let it go and it takes time and patience, it’s what the soul must do.

Victim energy can lead to…

  • Strained relationships that lead to resentment or codependency.
  • Missed opportunities for growth and achievement.
  • Higher stress levels and mental health struggles like anxiety or depression.
  • Difficulty seeing possibilities or making decisions.

Recognizing that these situations may be the result of your holding onto being a victim, can serve as a great motivator to heal it.

The longer victim energy controls your mindset, the harder it is to shift out of it, as those habits become more deeply rooted.

How to Let Go Of Victim Energy

Releasing victim energy requires self-awareness, courage, and commitment. Here are actionable steps to help…

1. Change Your Perspective

Instead of viewing setbacks as unfair, try to see them as opportunities for growth.

Ask yourself questions like, “What can I learn from this?” or “How can I move forward?” Small shifts in your thinking can open doors to new possibilities.

As described in The Power of TED: The Empowerment Dynamic by David Emerald, shifting from a victim mindset to a creator mindset helps you focus on what you can do, rather than what feels out of your control.

2. Take Responsibility

Taking ownership of your actions and choices is empowering. When you stop blaming others, you gain control over how you respond.

Start small, like setting a daily goal and following through. TED’s model encourages individuals to embrace personal responsibility as a way to design the outcomes they want rather than reacting to circumstances.

3. Focus on Gratitude

Write down three things you’re grateful for each day. This practice helps you focus on what’s working in your life instead of what’s not. Gratitude creates a positive mindset that builds momentum for change.

For me, a regular gratitude practice has been key in letting go of victim energy.

4. Set Boundaries

Saying no to situations or people that drain your energy is an important step. Boundaries protect your time and emotional health, helping you focus on what truly matters.

As you ask for what you need, you become a creator in your life.

You can absolutely set boundaries with love.

5. Get Support

You don’t have to do this alone. Talk to a therapist, coach, or trusted friend who can provide encouragement and guidance.

A support system gives you the tools and perspective to navigate your journey.

You do not walk your path alone, so be good to yourself and use the resources and people in your life that can help you. I’ve had more support than I can count to get over my own victim energy!

6. Build Emotional Resilience

Developing resilience helps you handle challenges with a positive outlook. Practices like journaling, meditation, and mindfulness teach you how to stay calm and take action even when life feels tough.

Building Creator Energy

Creator energy focuses on seeing yourself as the co-creator of your life. It starts with a shift in mindset—choosing to ask, How can I change this? instead of: Why does this always happen to me?

Creators take responsibility for creating their lives and believe in their ability to create the results they desire.

Again, as I reference above, David Emerald’s work on this subject is transformational and I highly recommend his book. See the triangle diagram below.

As you move away from victim energy, you’ll naturally develop a more empowered mindset. Empowered, creator energy involves:

  • Taking proactive steps toward goals.
  • Viewing challenges as opportunities for growth.
  • Believing in your ability to influence your life.
  • Cultivating a sense of purpose and direction.

Healing victim energy is a process and doesn’t happen overnight. But, with commitment and can be done and must be done!

Real-Life Example of Transformation

Consider Maria, who felt stuck in a job she disliked. She blamed her boss for her unhappiness and believed she had no other options.

After recognizing her victim energy, Maria began exploring her fears and limiting beliefs. She updated her resume, networked with friends, and eventually found a job that aligned with her passions. By taking responsibility, Maria shifted from victim energy to empowerment.

Another example is David, who often felt overlooked in his personal relationships. He realized that his victim mindset led him to withdraw instead of communicating his needs. By practicing assertiveness and setting boundaries, David improved his relationships and rediscovered his confidence.

Final thoughts

It’s part of your soul’s purpose to heal victim energy.

By identifying its presence, challenging limiting beliefs, and embracing your power to create change, you can break free and live a more empowered, joyful life.

Remember, the journey to overcoming victim energy is a process, and every step forward is a win.
