Emotional Release Therapy: 50 Ways To Be Free
Emotional release therapy is like a deep tissue massage for the mind, body and soul.
Emotions aren’t just fleeting experiences—they’re energetic imprints that can get stuck in our bodies, potentially leading to physical discomfort or mental stress.
In my work as a life coach and trainer in the healthcare industry, I’ve helped thousands of people, including myself, improve their emotional well-being. To fulfill our potential, ultimately we must face our feelings. The heavy baggage and emotional toll of our past stays with us until we release it.
You’re looking to lighten your emotional load!
This article offers you over 50+ emotional release methods. This list is one of the most holistic and comprehensive lists that I’ve curated to help you be freer than you are now.
Please do your due diligence to decide which approaches work best for you. The body is designed to heal... and we need help!

Understanding Emotional Release Therapy
Emotional release therapy is a healing approach focused on accessing and releasing trapped emotions stored in the body. Instead of relying only on talking through experiences, it works through the physical and emotional sensations that allow suppressed feelings to surface, move, and resolve.
When we make emotional release a regular part of our self-care, it’s life changing.
I know as well as anyone how uncomfortable some emotions are. However, the good news is that we can transform these emotions and ourselves by regularly doing the methods in this article.
NOTE: I don’t receive any affiliate compensation for the therapies listed in this article. This is purely a resource to help people free themselves from emotional pain.
How Emotional Release Therapy Works
Emotional release therapy draws from both ancient healing practices and modern psychotherapy, recognizing that emotions are often held physically, not just mentally. Through movement, breath, sound, or somatic awareness, the body becomes the pathway through which emotional tension is released.
If you’ve ever felt relief after a deep cry, experienced stress melting away through movement, or felt lighter after expressing emotion physically, you’ve already experienced emotional release. These moments show how the body naturally knows how to let go when given permission and space.
For a complete guide to soul healing including how to feel emotions, emotional release methods, soul lessons, soul contracts, ego death, shadow work, grounding your energy, soul alignment, read: Soul Healing: A Simple Guide To Joining Heart And Soul.
An important note is that as uncomfortable emotions arise to be released, don’t feed them. It makes it worse to feed them. Here’s my short TikTok video about that.

50 Examples of Emotional Release
Emotional release can happen in many different ways, from subtle inner shifts to powerful physical expressions. These examples show how emotions naturally move through the body and nervous system when given permission to be felt, expressed, and released.
Tapping (EFT – Emotional Freedom Technique)
Tapping involves gently tapping on specific meridian points on your body while focusing on negative emotions. It helps to release energy blockages and reduce emotional distress.
According to The Tapping Solution, founded by siblings Nick, Jessica, and Alex Ortner, “Tapping is also known as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). It is a powerful holistic healing technique that resolves a range of issues. It’s based on the combined principles of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology.”
They state on their website: “The basic Tapping technique requires you to focus on a negative emotion at hand. This can be a fear, a worry, a bad memory, or any unresolved problem. You do this while maintaining your mental focus on this issue. Then you use your fingertips to tap 5-7 times on 9 specific meridian points of the body.
Tapping on these meridian endpoints, while addressing the root cause of distress, sends a calming signal to the brain. This allows you to feel relaxed and in control.”
Personally, I have used EFT for decades. It’s a powerful healing method. Your belief in whatever healing method you use is part of its usefulness to you.

Breath work for Emotional Release
Breathwork is one of the most powerful tools for releasing emotions. It helps relax your nervous system, allowing emotions to rise and be released. Techniques like diaphragmatic breathing, Wim Hof, or even simple deep breathing are effective for tapping into stored emotions and letting them go.
“Breath is the bridge between the body and the mind. By controlling our breath, we can access the depths of our emotions.” – Ancient Eastern Philosophy
EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
EMDR is a powerful technique practiced with a therapist to help process and release trapped emotions, particularly those related to trauma. It involves guided eye movements while focusing on distressing memories, helping rewire emotional responses and reduce their impact. EMDR is especially effective for those dealing with past traumatic experiences.
According to the EMDR Institute, “EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.
Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference.
The Body Keeps the Score BY Bessel Van der Kolk
EMDR is also a modality used for treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder – PTSD according to The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van der Kolk, M.D.

In this remarkable book, on page 208, Dr. Van der Kolk writes, “Neuroscience research shows that the only way we can change the way we feel is by becoming aware of our inner experience and learning to befriend what is going on inside of ourselves.”
In Chapter 15 – Letting Go of the Past: EMDR, on page 255, he writes:
I highly recommend this book if you’re interested in PTSD, whether you’re a therapist, clinician, counselor, or layperson.
And here’s my post to help you not live in the past.

Somatic Sensory Therapy
Think body focused versus traditional talk therapy.
Harvard Health writes, “What’s the fundamental concept? ‘It’s a treatment focusing on the body and how emotions appear within the body,’ Baker explains. ‘Somatic therapies posit that our body holds and expresses experiences and emotions, and traumatic events or unresolved emotional issues can become ‘trapped’ inside.'”
“But in somatic therapy, the body is the starting point to achieve healing. This form of therapy cultivates an awareness of bodily sensations, and teaches people to feel safe in their bodies while exploring thoughts, emotions, and memories.”
How is somatic sensory therapy performed?
From the Harvard Health article, that I strongly recommend reading…
“A somatic therapist helps people release damaging, pent-up emotions in their body by using various mind-body techniques. These can vary widely, ranging from acupressure and hypnosis to breath work and dance.“
Other techniques might be:
- Body awareness – Helps people identify tension in the body and think calming thoughts
- Pendulation, which I mention in this article.
- Titration – Takes people through a traumatic memory while noting any accompanying physical sensations and addressing them in real time in a safe environment.
- Resourcing – This helps people use resources in their lives that promote feelings of calm and safety, such as comforting people and places they’ve been to.
Sound Healing
Sound healing has become one of my personal favorite ways to calm my nervous system and recalibrate my mind, body, and soul.
Sound can quickly change your vibration, your energy. Spiritual medium Rebecca Rosen has a podcast, Small Medium at Large where she talks about many ways to heal and clear energy from your body. Here’s an episode that applies to sound therapy:
Energy Boundaries, Cleansing & Living as the Light
In this episode she talks about, “Sound for quick clearing: Tuning forks, singing bowls, humming/chanting, or 432/528 Hz tracks can rapidly reset your field.”

Pushing Through by Rainer Maria Rilke
This might be a good place to pause, because reading about emotions can be a bit much can’t it?
When I was feeling pushed to my limit, I’d go on a walk and I’d recite Rainer Maria Rilke‘s beautiful poem, Pushing Through. I’d say it over and over until my nervous system felt calm… or calmer.
It’s possible I am pushing through solid rock
in flintlike layers, as the ore lies, alone;
I am such a long way in I see no way through,
and no space: everything is close to my face,
and everything close to my face is stone.
I don’t have much knowledge yet in grief
so this massive darkness makes me small.
You be the master: make yourself fierce, break in:
then your great transforming will happen to me,
and my great grief cry will happen to you.
The image of having your face within inches of solid rock, maybe you’re in a chasm, staring at it and knowing you can’t move it… there’s no space and no way through. When I feel something akin to this, I’m deeply comforted by this poem.
Maybe this poem will work for you as well. OK, back to more tools.
Body Movement: Dance and Shaking
Movement is essential for releasing emotional energy from the body. Dance, shaking, and other forms of uninhibited physical movement allow the body to release emotions in a very organic and natural way. These methods help unstick the emotional energy that gets trapped in the body’s tissues.
There is a lot more to be said here, so I plan to update this section.
Working with Crystals
I’ve used crystals in my space for a long time to help me raise my personal vibration and the vibration of my personal space. I found this website Love Selenite.com with a beautiful background story and a large selection of very special crystals.
“Selenite has always stood out to me as one of the most extraordinary crystals. Its luminous glow, smooth texture, and powerful energy make it truly special. Known for its ability to cleanse negativity, enhance meditation, and promote spiritual clarity, selenite is more than just a beautiful crystal—it’s a tool for balance and transformation.”
Color Therapy
Color therapy is a complementary practice that uses color, light, and visualization to influence mood, emotional tone, and energy frequency.
Guided Visualization
Guided visualization acts as a symbolic representation that helps you better understand your emotions. Visualizing your emotions as something physical—like a heavy stone or a dark cloud—can help you release them more easily. Use visualization exercises to let go of what no longer serves you.
Guided imagery is like accessing your subconscious to transform emotional energy into clarity.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR)
PMR involves tensing and then releasing muscle groups. This practice helps release stored physical tension, while also creating a sense of relaxation. PMR is excellent for uncovering hidden emotional blocks that might be affecting your physical state.
Crying as Release
Crying is one of the simplest and most cathartic forms of emotional release. Many people avoid crying, but letting yourself cry—either alone or with a supportive person—can help purge sadness, grief, and frustration.
Crying is productive when you feel relief from it. It’s a natural way to allow sadness to be felt and released.
However, some people say they can’t cry… so don’t focus on it if it’s frustrating for you.
And if crying doesn’t bring you relief, then there might be emotions that are a little deeper. Possibly get professional help for those deeper emotions that want to be felt.
It’s not easy to feel pain and discomfort, so when you need help, seek the help of a skilled therapist or counselor.
Spending time in nature
One of the advantages of nature is that people feel closer to God/Source/universe in nature.
Nature enlivens the senses and connects us to the part of ourselves that is peaceful and not thinking, etc.
A study at Yale University “found that people who spent two hours a week in green spaces — local parks or other natural environments, either all at once or spaced over several visits — were substantially more likely to report good health and psychological well-being than those who don’t.”
Practicing Gratitude
Start the day with an attitude of gratitude.
This is a form of emotional release because gratitude replaces fear and lack. So, in the spirit of feeling your emotions as they arise – feel them, release them, then think of what you’re grateful for.
My favorite gratitude prayer: Say each morning before your feet hit the floor is below.
A regular gratitude practice where you thank the sacred otherness of life is good for body, mind, and soul.

Gratitude Prayer
Dear YOUR NAME FOR THE SACRED OTHERNESS OF LIFE:
Thank you for this day.
Thank you for being here every step along the way.
I welcome your guidance and your love as I show up today
to fulfill my mission in this life.
Now, list what you’re grateful for…
NOTE: Include in the list FEELINGS you are grateful for. For example, I am grateful for feeling peaceful, relaxed, secure, neutral, at ease, etc.
Shouting into a Pillow
Letting out anger or frustration in a controlled way can be an incredible release. Shouting into a pillow allows you to express emotions that may have been building up without fear of harming anyone or being judged.
Expressive Arts Therapy
Journaling, painting, or creating music helps release emotions by channeling them into a creative medium. Expressive arts let you engage with emotions in a way that feels safe and productive.
“Art helps us get to the deeper layers of ourselves, where words cannot reach.”
Acupressure and Reiki
Acupressure and Reiki are techniques that work with the body’s energy channels to release blockages. Trapped emotions are seen as energy blockages, and these practices help restore energy flow and balance.
ERP: Exposure and Response Prevention
ERP is used to treat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD.
McClean Hospital writes, “ERP therapy is a behavioral therapy that gradually exposes people to situations designed to provoke a person’s obsessions in a safe environment.”
The International OCD Foundation writes, “The exposure component of ERP refers to practicing confronting the thoughts, images, objects, and situations that make you anxious and/or provoke your obsessions.”
Do your due diligence to decide what approach is best for you.

F.A.C.E. technique by Jeanne Nangle
Created by myself, F. A. C. E. is – Feel it. Allow and Accept it. Choose a high vibe thought. Exhale.
- Face your emotions fully.
- Accept how you feel.
- Choose a strengthening, empowering thought.
- Exhale.
Here’s an example…
- To face my emotions, I begin by noticing: Am I sad? Angry? Afraid? I notice where the feeling is in my body. Is it in my chest, stomach, or throat? Say to yourself: I am angry. Use wording that feels accurate for you. Let yourself feel, don’t avoid or hold onto the thought or feeling.
- Next, accept that you feel this way. Say: It’s OK that I’m afraid. I accept that I feel this way.
- Choose thoughts that strengthen and remind you that you’re stronger than you think and in charge of your life.
- Breathe throughout to ground and relax you.
Grounding Your Energy
One of the most important things you can do for yourself is after you’ve felt your emotions… ground your energy each day. For those of us who are absorbing the energy of those around us, we need to drain that energy so we don’t carry it.
My favorite way to ground my energy is by visually and energetically opening up two drains in the soles of my feet and move the energy out and down and into the earth.

Automatic writing
Automatic writing is a practice where someone produces written words without consciously thinking of what they’re writing.
The idea is to let your hand move across the page or keyboard freely, allowing thoughts and ideas to flow without interference from your conscious mind..
Therapeutic Touch and Massage
Massage can help release physical tension, which is often connected to emotional stress. Deep tissue or therapeutic massages help access stored emotional memories and release them through physical touch.
Screaming Therapy
Screaming, similar to shouting into a pillow, is a way to let out intense emotions like anger or frustration. It can be done in a secluded area or into a pillow to avoid disturbing others.
Journaling for Release
Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a powerful emotional release method. It helps you process and let go of emotions that might be difficult to verbalize.
Journaling is a wonderful technique for finding yourself as well. You can feel safe in your journal and explore your feelings openly, which leads to self-knowledge.
Toning
By creating sustained vocal tones, you can stimulate vibrations that help release emotional tension. Toning can be practiced alone or in a group, and it helps activate and balance energy within the body.
This very effective technique uses the vibration and sound of the out-breath from deep within the body to release emotional pressure.
Play with this by exhaling while making an ahhhh sound that vibrates in your throat. Then, notice if your body feels slightly better.
Physical Exercise
Engaging in physical activities like running, boxing, or yoga can help release pent-up emotional energy. The physical exertion helps to clear emotional blockages. Here are yoga props to support your yoga practice.
Prayers and Mantras
Easy to remember prayers and mantras fill the mind with high-vibration thoughts, replacing negative, low-energy thoughts. It’s a great way to fall asleep, wake up each day, recite while walking, etc.
Focusing on the good
Keep your thoughts supportive and self-loving during your emotional times. This skill will always serve you.
I’m quoted in Forbes magazine about the important of focusing your attention on the potential ahead in life. The skill of being about to turn your attention to what’s positive is vital to happiness.
Singing
Singing, whether in the shower or with a group, can be an effective emotional release. The act of vocalizing helps release tension and express emotions freely.
Yoga
Certain yoga poses are particularly effective for emotional release, such as heart-openers and hip stretches. These poses help release tension stored in these areas of the body.
Here’s a good website with Yoga Props like yoga mats, clothes, equipment, etc.
Tai Chi or Qigong
These slow, meditative movements help balance the body’s energy, release emotional tension, and promote mental clarity and relaxation.
Hugging
Hugging releases oxytocin, the “love hormone,” which helps to reduce stress and release stored emotions. A long, supportive hug can be incredibly healing.
Meditation
Meditation helps bring awareness to your emotions, allowing you to observe and release them without attachment. Techniques like mindfulness meditation are particularly helpful.
There are countless books on ways to meditate. My favorite is Jon Kabat Zinn’s, Wherever You Go, There you Are.
In meditation, you are observing whatever comes up, anger, fear, sadness, longing, thoughts … and returning to the breath.
This works as an emotional release method if you want to release during meditation.

Shaking Therapy
Shaking the body, much like animals do after a stressful event, can help release tension and emotional energy. Simply stand and shake your body for a few minutes to let go of stress.
Listening to Poems of Self-compassion by the poet David Whyte
The popular and soulful poet, David Whyte, recites poems of self-compassion including Mary Oliver’s The Journey and The Wild Geese, as well as other renowned poets who write about self-love and self-compassion. This audio is absolutely healing and incredible.
Allow how you feel…
Mashhur Anam Holographic meditation
Mashhur Anam with Debra Poneman
This is one of my favorite guided meditations. The meditation happens at about 30:00 minutes into the interview and lasts about 10 minutes.
Emotional Release through Dance
Dancing freely without worrying about how you look allows your body to express and release emotions. It’s a joyful way to let go of emotional baggage.
Mindfulness Walks
Walking mindfully in nature, paying attention to each step and breath, can help ground you and release emotions that may be weighing you down.

Cold Water Therapy
Cold water immersion or cold showers can help release emotions by triggering a physiological reset in your body. It’s invigorating and helps release stored tension.
Primal Scream
A primal scream, done in a safe environment, can help you access deep-seated emotions and release them powerfully. It’s an intense but effective release method.
Pendulation
Dr. David Hanscom MD, in his article, You Have to Feel to Heal – Emotional Awareness, talks about a technique called Pendulation.
It’s an exercise that helps the client experience the pain in the body, then go to a place of calm in the body, then connect the two sensations. Picture a pendulum swinging back and forth and ultimately landing in the middle. Here’s an excerpt describing the idea behind it:
“You have to “feel to heal” but if you were exposed to the full force of your unpleasant emotions, it would be intolerable. The pain would be too intense. It is impossible. Instead, there is a process called pendulation. The idea is that you allow yourself to be exposed to a level of emotions you can tolerate, pull back, and re-engage when you are ready. It is a lifelong process that eventually becomes automatic.”

Laughing Therapy
Laughter is a natural stress reliever. Engaging in laughter yoga or simply watching something funny can help release emotional tension and promote a sense of joy.
The Sedona Method
Some techniques are simple and can be used on the go, like The Sedona Method. It’s one of my personal favorite emotional release techniques because it’s easy, you can do it anywhere, anytime, and it goes a little deeper without going too deep.
With The Sedona Method, you allow and accept your emotion, then ask yourself if you can let it go IN THAT MOMENT. You’re not letting go forever necessarily, just at the moment.
Salt baths
Salt alkalizes the body which is calming and good for you. Think of swimming in the ocean and how good that feels to your body. Notice how cuts heal and your skin looks sun kissed! Saltwater in your tub can do the same thing. Try 1 to 2 cups of Epsom salts into your bathtub and close your eyes and relax.
Walking
There are countless benefits to walking. So, get out and walk each day when you can. Julia Cameron in The Artist’s Way talks about imprinting the ground with your heartache and pain with each step as a kind of meditation. I did this for years while grieving the loss of my husband and it worked wonders.
Forgiveness Exercises
Practicing forgiveness, whether of yourself or others, can help release resentment and anger. Self-forgiveness is important for helping you release self-judgment.
Body Scanning
Body scanning involves mentally scanning your body for areas of tension and consciously relaxing them. This helps release emotions stored in different parts of your body.
Diaphragmatic breathing with hands on the stomach.
While breathing gently and deeply, expanding your abdomen, place your hands on the abdomen.
Cuddling with a Pet
Spending time with a pet can be incredibly calming and help release emotions. The unconditional love from pets provides a safe space for emotional expression.
Visualization of Release
Visualize your emotions leaving your body as light, smoke, or another form. This mental imagery can help facilitate the release of emotions that feel stuck.
Walk a labyrinth
A labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness. It represents a journey to our own center and back again, out into the world.
When I felt lost, I’d go to the labyrinth in San Francisco.

There are 3 stages of the walk:
Purgation (Releasing) ~ A releasing, letting go of the details of your life. This is the act of shedding thoughts and distractions. A time to open the heart and quiet the mind.
Illumination (Receiving) ~ When you reach the center, stay there as long as you like. It is a place of meditation and prayer. Receive what is there for you to receive.
Union (Returning) ~ As you leave, following the same path out of the center as you came in, you enter the third stage, which is joining God, your Higher
Creating a Supportive Environment
To fully benefit from these emotional release methods, creating a supportive environment for yourself is crucial.
This could include setting up a cozy space for self-reflection, playing calming music, or surrounding yourself with uplifting art. The more supported and safe you feel, the more effective these emotional release techniques will be.
The Benefits of Emotional Release
The benefits of emotional release are immense. Physically, it can lead to improved sleep, digestion, and reduced pain. Mentally, you may find greater clarity, reduced anxiety, and enhanced creativity.
And emotionally, you become more in tune with yourself, finding freedom and joy more readily. It’s like a Marie Kondo-style decluttering—removing what doesn’t serve you so only joy remains.
Answering Your Questions
How long does it take to feel the benefits?
For many people, the benefits of emotional release can be felt almost immediately—like a wave of calm washing over you. For deeper, longer-lasting effects, it often takes multiple sessions or practices. Releasing emotions is not a one-time event, but an ongoing journey.
Can I do this on my own, or do I need a therapist?
While working with a therapist can be incredibly helpful, many of these emotional release methods can be practiced on your own. Techniques like journaling, breathwork, and grounding exercises are accessible to everyone and can be done without professional guidance.
Taking Action
Emotional release therapy can be deeply transformative. Start by picking one or two techniques that resonate with you and practice them consistently. Over time, you may find it easier to process difficult emotions and cultivate a sense of peace and joy.
Remember, releasing trapped emotions is about creating freedom within yourself. The journey isn’t always easy, but the rewards are profound.
Set your expectations
Emotional release takes time.
And it can be frustrating because you begin to ask: How many times will this come up for me? Will I ever be able to let these emotions go?
Set your expectations when it comes to letting go of old energy. This process is like chipping away at a rock.
Be patient with yourself because emotions are stubborn. The ego is stubborn! However, as we allow them, bit by bit, we lighten their presence.
Emotional release helps us get enough distance to say: I see this anger. I feel this fear. And I can let it go, at least at this moment.
Remember, you’re designed to heal your life. And your soul is here on earth to learn and grow.
It’s OK if it takes a lifetime.

Also, avoid sugar when anxious
Although this isn’t an emotional release therapy, it’s important to mention this here.
When you’re struggling with low emotional energy, sugar will make it worse. ie: sugar, sugar substitutes, flour, alcohol. In The Sugar Blues by William Duffy, he breaks this down beautifully. He was talking about this in the 1970’s when we didn’t hear about it all the time.
While I’m not a fan of depriving myself of foods I enjoy, if my energy is anxious, nervous, or afraid, during those times, I’m especially going to dump sugar.
Try and decrease sugar for all of the well-known reasons though

Emotional energy accumulates
Emotional energy accumulates in the body because we were unable to fully feel and accept it when something happened. So the practice is to lean into the emotion as it arises, without any story or thoughts.
The body is designed to heal
It’s empowering to remind ourselves that as we feel and release, we are healing our lives.
The body is designed to heal.
Emotions are energy, and while they can be uncomfortable and we feel stuck with them, there are effective ways to release painful emotional energy from the body, so you can be free.
Note: If you’re feeling particularly vulnerable, then seek the help of a qualified healthcare professional.
A quick note about healing and the soul
Soul growth and emotional healing go hand in hand. They are not separate goals. As we do the emotional healing, the connection to higher energies becomes easier and stronger.
As someone who has been on a healing and spiritual journey for decades, and has helped many others, I know this to be true. For your quick reference, here’s my Guide to Spiritual Growth as quick reference for what spiritual growth may look like from a soulful point of view.
Final thoughts
There’s an affirmation widely used in the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): I deeply and completely love and accept myself, which is more powerful than you might think.
At the heart of emotional release is your willingness to love and accept your headaches, your anger, your hatred, your rage, and your fear of everything, as you slowly move it out.
I know… this seems impossible. At least it seemed that way to me. (My story is here.)
However, as you recite this seemingly simple phrase, your body rests. As you accept something, you’re no longer fighting it. You stop resisting.
Resistance takes a lot of energy and creates tension! While emotional release lets go of tension.
For example, put your two fists together, like they’re fighting one another. That’s how resistance feels to the body, like hitting a block wall.
Being human is hard! However, we’re sent here to learn and grow and watch our humanness moment by moment.
Therefore, we need a mighty dose of patience with ourselves.
FAQ – Emotional Release Therapy
What is emotional release therapy and how does it work?
Emotional release therapy helps you access and release emotions stored in your body. It’s not about talking through emotions—it’s about feeling them fully and letting them go through many techniques like breath work, movement, crying, EMDR, Tapping, etc. Emotional release shifts you from mental processing to a lived, physical experience of feeling your emotions with the intention of healing.
Is emotional release therapy the same as emotional healing?
They’re deeply connected. Emotional healing is the overall process of feeling better over time, while emotional release is one way to get there—by letting go of what you’ve been carrying. Through these practices you create inner space for clarity, peace, and more of your natural energy to return.
Can emotional release therapy help with anxiety or depression?
Yes—because anxiety and depression often sit on top of unexpressed emotions like fear, sadness, or anger. When you release those deeper feelings through crying, breath work, movement, etc., you feel lighter inside. It’s not a quick fix, but it’s a powerful way to support your emotional well-being naturally.
What are some emotional release techniques I can try at home?
There are many in the article, but a few to start with include: deep breathing with your hands on your belly, journaling without editing yourself, shaking out your arms and legs, walking barefoot outside, or shouting into a pillow. These simple tools help move emotions through your body gently and safely.
Is crying a real form of emotional release therapy?
Yes, and it’s one of the most natural. Crying helps move sadness, grief, and frustration out of your system. But not everyone can cry—and that’s okay. If tears don’t come, try other tools like breathwork, walking, or guided visualization. Your body will find its own way to let go.
Are emotional release practices safe to do on your own?
Yes, many are safe and easy to do by yourself. Journaling, breathing, walking in nature, or doing gentle movement are all ways to release emotions. Just go slowly, and if something feels too intense or stuck, it’s wise to get help from a trusted professional. You don’t have to do it all alone.
How often should I practice emotional release?
There’s no rule—but when you feel tense, foggy, or emotionally heavy, it’s a good time to pause and release. Light practices like journaling, gratitude, or walking can be done daily. And when something bigger comes up, your body will usually tell you—it’s time to let go.
Final thoughts
It’s a courageous act to stand back far enough to feel and let go, repeatedly. Emotional release helps you accomplish this.
We feel it to heal it. That’s how the body is made.
The over 30 emotional release methods I’ve suggested in this post will help you feel your emotions and move emotional energy out of the body.
Stuck emotional energy makes us feel tired, depressed, anxious, and a host of other uncomfortable or negative emotions.
You’re designed to heal and I wish this for you along your soul’s path.
